Job Description

Position Summary

The Railcar Shop Lead supports daily shop operations by coordinating work activities, assisting technicians and inspectors, and ensuring repairs are completed safely and efficiently. This role provides daytoday guidance on the shop floor, helps maintain workflow, and supports operational needs as directed by management. The Shop Lead performs handson repair work and serves as a working lead to help keep production on schedule.

 

Key Responsibilities

Daily Workflow Support

  • Assist with organizing and prioritizing daily repair tasks as assigned by management.
  • Provide direction to technicians during shifts to maintain workflow and productivity.
  • Perform handson railcar repair and maintenance work as part of the daily workload.
  • Communicate job status updates, delays, or material needs to the Director of Operations.

Operational Assistance

  • Support the coordination of equipment, tools, and work areas to ensure readiness for daily tasks.
  • Monitor progress of assigned work and notify management of issues or obstacles.
  • Ensure repair documentation and work orders are completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Materials & Inventory Support
  • Assist with monitoring shop materials, parts, and supplies.
  • Notify management when inventory levels are low or when materials need to be ordered.
  • Help maintain organized storage areas and proper handling of parts and equipment.

Quality & Safety

  • Follow and reinforce company safety policies and regulatory requirements (FRA, AAR, OSHA, etc.).
  • Participate in routine shop inspections and report safety concerns to management.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazardfree work environment.
  • Support quality checks and ensure work meets company standards.
  • Communication & Coordination
  • Communicate effectively with technicians, inspectors, and management regarding daily tasks.
  • Provide updates on job progress, additional repair needs, or resource requirements.
  • Assist with reporting labor hours or productivity information as directed.
  • Continuous Improvement Support
  • Provide feedback to management on workflow challenges or opportunities for improvement.
  • Support implementation of new procedures or training as assigned.
  • Participate in team discussions to improve safety, quality, and efficiency.

 

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in industrial shop environments with exposure to noise, machinery, and outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders and access railcar structures safely.
  • Must meet company safety and fitnessforduty requirements.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience in mechanical railcar repair or inspection preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of FRA and AAR inspection and repair requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, repair manuals, and regulatory standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass all required safety and regulatory training.
