Description
The Parks Maintenance Worker is a full-time, technical, field position in the Department of Parks and Recreation and reports to the Parks Crew Lead. The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain the green spaces, landscape, and parks within the Village of Pleasant Prairie. Hours are scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Workdays may fluctuate on a rotating 8 or 10-hour scheduled basis with weekend, holiday, evening and overtime work required.
Job Duties:
- Assists with the upkeep and safety of Village parks, green spaces, and landscaped areas as part of the Parks Maintenance team.
- Utilizes manual maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, a shovel, rake, hoe, pole saw, and broom in parks maintenance daily work.
- Safely operates power tools such as, but not limited to, chainsaw, weed trimmer, hedge trimmer, roto-tiller, and brush chippers.
- Safely operates motorized equipment for park maintenance activities, including, but not limited to, bed edger, skid steer, small tractor, sandpro, zero-turn lawnmower, and brush chipper.
- Utilizes a PC based computer to monitor work orders, record work, and generate various reports.
- In winter months, supports the Highway Department by completing regular maintenance and the safe operation of snow removal equipment.
- Knowledge of automated lawn sprinkler systems
- Familiar with the location of Village parks, sewer stations and lift stations
- Assist in recreation activities as directed.
- Utilizes safe practices and takes protective measures as required, including wearing all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Follows all Village policies and procedures, and Village codes and ordinances.
- Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Department of Parks & Recreation.
Requirements
Physical:
- Essential job functions of this position require a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, and lifting and carrying a range of weight up to 100 pounds.
- Must be capable of physically demanding work in inclement weather for an extended period of time and in areas of noxious odors and smells, in wet or muddy areas, work in close proximity to loud and moving equipment and work in an environment where the noise level is usually moderately loud.
- Must have the ability to recognize possible exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as carbon monoxide, gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfate, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact.
- Frequent public interaction which requires the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Educational, Certifications, and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- First Aid/CPR certification required within six months of hire.
- Confined Space certification required within six months of hire.
- Work Zone Safety Training required within six months of hire.
- Winter Operations Salt Reduction Training required within six months of hire.
