SUMMARY
Performs landscaping tasks and operates a variety of small engine equipment. Work includes chemical application, and general landscape maintenance and installation. This position operates various types of equipment at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Equipment operated includes mowers, skid steer, dingo, water truck, small motorized equipment, and chemical sprayer.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Sprays weeds and treats for pests. Performs routine and special landscape maintenance. Installs plant material and maintains landscape areas. Operates small engine equipment such as chainsaws, string trimmers, and blowers. Operates heavy equipment and trucks such as F550 dump truck, skid steer, dingo, truck with trailer, and chemical sprayer. Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety. Completes related records and reports. Performs related manual labor.
General Information:
Works (Tuesday-Friday 6:00 AM-4:00 PM). Ability to work other shifts and overtime when required by assignment, inclement weather or urgent/emergency situations. Subject to emergency calls back to work.
Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and, therefore, exclude them from employment.
Valid CDL-B required with no more than 6 points. Ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit.

Minimum Qualifications:
No minimum level plus three years of experience
High School Graduate or Equivalent plus one year of experience
CDL A or B, depending on the area of assignment
Preferred Qualification:
High School graduation/GED and at least one year of experience operating one or more pieces of equipment mentioned previously, or if no high school diploma/GED, three years’ experience required. One to three years’ experience in the operation of one or more of the pieces of equipment mentioned previously.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Experience with landscape maintenance and installation.
Knowledge of safety precautions and work hazards involved in the operation of equipment.
Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in the operation of equipment.
Skill in:
Basic computer skills to complete online work orders.
Ability to:
Ability to work independently on multiple tasks.
Must be able to read and write sufficiently to complete records and reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner with airport tenants and the public.
Ability to work other shifts and overtime when required.

Physical Requirements:
Spends 60% of the time performing manual labor and 40% of the time operating various equipment. Performs related manual labor during the remainder of the time. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. Work involves sitting, standing, bending, walking, driving, climbing, lifting, shoveling, pushing/pulling, carrying, twisting, reaching, and kneeling/squatting. Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to operate manual and automatic vehicles.
Works inside and outside. Exposed to machinery, moving objects, vehicles, dust, slippery and uneven surfaces, excessive noise, vibrating tools and inclement weather. Works shifts and irregular hours.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
