Description
Wheeler Machinery Co.’s Power & Energy Division is seeking a mid-career Business Development Representative to grow our Caterpillar standby and backup power generation business. This role focuses on identifying, developing, and advancing opportunities for emergency and standby power systems supporting mission-critical facilities.
The ideal candidate brings experience in power generation, electrical construction, or engineered equipment sales and is comfortable working with electrical contractors, consulting engineers, and end-use customers. This individual will build strong regional relationships, develop a qualified opportunity pipeline, and support capture, proposal, and closing activities in coordination with Sales, Marketing, and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Market Development & Opportunity Identification
- Identify and qualify backup and standby power generation opportunities utilizing Caterpillar generator systems.
- Develop a targeted market strategy focused on healthcare, municipal infrastructure, government facilities, commercial buildings, and industrial applications.
- Track market trends, customer needs, and competitive activity.
- Build and maintain a reliable pipeline of qualified opportunities.
Business Development & Capture Support
- Establish relationships with contractors, engineers, facility owners, and end users.
- Support opportunity development, bid/no-bid reviews, and pursuit strategy.
- Assist with quoting coordination and contract negotiations in collaboration with Sales and leadership.
Proposal & Solution Development
- Contribute to proposals and RFP responses with customer insight and technical context.
- Collaborate with Sales teams to shape compliant, compelling, competitive, and differentiated solutions.
Client Engagement & Brand Representation
- Represent Wheeler Machinery at regional industry events.
- Plan and lead customer meetings and events, lunch-and-learns, and site visits.
Performance Tracking & Reporting
- Track and report business development activities, pipeline status, and customer interactions.
- Other duties as required or assigned
Qualifications
Experience
- 3–7 years of experience in business development, sales, or account management within power generation, electrical infrastructure, or engineered equipment markets.
- Experience supporting standby or emergency power systems preferred.
Skills & Attributes
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
- Ability to align customer requirements with technical solutions.
- Organized, self-motivated, and comfortable managing multiple opportunities.
- Technical knowledge of Caterpillar standby power solutions.
