Job Description

**SIGN-ON BONUS**

The successful candidate will receive a $1,000 sign-on bonus ($500 paid at time of hire and $500 paid at the end of 90 days of employment.

 

Reporting to the Supervisor of Carpentry, Paint and Lock Shop, the Painter performs painting duties to support the maintenance needs of the Deerfield Academy campus buildings, dormitories, and residential spaces.   

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for painting and related tasks to support the maintenance and upkeep of the campus, including painting/coating/wallpapering of walls, ceilings, floors, doors/windows, furniture, and siding.  Ensure a high quality of workmanship.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting/coating or wall papering (wood, drywall, plaster, metal, concrete, brick, etc) by recognized procedures and techniques of the painting trade, including tape/mud/sanding on drywall and similar for plaster.  
  • Make minor repairs as appropriate
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage and labelling of unused paints, cleaning solutions etc. and collaborate with the Environmental Health & Safety Manager to ensure proper disposal. 
  • Responsible for protection of all surfaces and surrounding areas, including removal/reinstallation of hardware/fixtures that are in the work area
  • Perform light carpentry and maintenance tasks as requested in support of the Carpentry, Paint and Lock shop
  • Collaborate with other trades as necessary
  • Ensure painting/wallpapering etc. tasks are completed at appropriate sequence in the overall project and are executed in a timely manner
  • Follow all established protocol for work requests and completion of tasks as requested to ensure consistency and work order tracking
  • Attend professional development classes to expand knowledge of the trade and any changes within the trade
  • Utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment at all times
  • Comply with all Academy Safety Program policies and procedures while performing job duties, both on and off Academy property. Attend safety training as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of painting tasks including paint colors, brands, sheens, etc as necessary to enable color-matching for touchups and repairs.
  • Maintain paint shop, work area(s) and assigned work vehicle(s) in a clean and organized fashion at all times
  • Coordinate supplies, equipment and materials purchases with Supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

  • Completion of 12th grade or equivalent
  • 5-7 years relevant experience 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Ability to read and write and take oral and written instructions
  • Basic computer skills including Outlook required
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • MA Lead Safe Renovator-Supervisor training/certification required within 3 months of hire
  • MA Lead Safe Renovator-Supervisor Moderate Risk Deleading Option training/certification required within 3 months of hire
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Knowledge of proper surface preparation
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform wall papering, drywall taping, sheetrock and plaster repairs
  • Knowledge of washing and cleaning materials and techniques 
  • Knowledge of paint products and characteristics, and painting and spraying techniques

  • Ability to occasionally work off hours/overtime/weekends to accommodate maintenance needs and align work with student absences from campus

Physical Demands 

  • Knowledge of and ability to safely use power tools, ladders, and staging

Working Conditions

  • Worker is occasionally in close quarters, crawl spaces, small enclosed rooms and other areas that could cause claustrophobia
