Job Description

Job Title: School Nurse                                                                    


Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


Reports to: Director of Nursing                                                       


 Pay Grade: Teacher Steps


Dept. /School: Nursing Services                                                       


Days: 187


Supervises:     School Health Aide


Primary Purpose: To strengthen the educational process through improvement of the health status and learning of children


Qualifications:


Education/Certification:


 



  • Registered Nurse with academic preparation at the associate or baccalaureate level, BSN preferred.

  • Current Texas license issued by the Board of Nurse Examiners.

  • Current certification in CPR/AED

  • Nursing care of the school age child


Experience:


 



  • Preferred: two years of supervised nurse practice preferably in pediatrics and medical/surgical nursing prior to entry into school nursing.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:



  • Provide assessment and nursing care for all ill and injured students.

  • Utilize a district knowledge base for decision making in nursing practice.

  • Use a systematic approach to problem solving in nursing practice.

  • Contribute to the education of the student with special health needs by assessing the student, planning, and providing appropriate nursing care, and evaluating the identified outcomes of care.

  • Use effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills.

  • Collaborate with other school professionals, parents, and caregivers to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of students.

  • Collaborate with members of the community in the delivery of health and social services, and utilize knowledge of community health systems and resources to function as a school community liaison.

  • Assist students, families and the school community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.

  • Contribute to school health through innovations on practice and participation in research or research-related activities.
