Description
- Primary customer service contact. Provides safe, on-time, and courteous service to CARTA and its surrounding communities.
- Operates various types of transit buses in revenue and non-revenue service.
- Drivers are required to pick-up and drop off passengers at bus stops, stations, or at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations based on strict time schedules.
- Drivers must operate vehicles safely, especially when traffic is heavier than normal. They cannot let light traffic put them ahead of schedule so that they miss passengers.
- Drivers must enjoy the opportunity to work without direct supervision, with full responsibility for their vehicle and passengers.
Major Duties:
- Follow established rules and regulations.
- Follow time schedules and route assignments.
- Operate all vehicles assigned safely in all weather and traffic conditions. This includes performing pre-trip inspection and completing required daily paperwork.
- Complete all required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner on a daily basis.
- Accurately collect all passenger fares, based on established fare schedules.
- Timely and accurately submit all accident and/or unusual occurrence report as required.
- Provide customer service (answer questions, give directions regarding transfer points, etc.) to all passengers with courtesy.
- Operate fare collection equipment and report any mechanical/equipment problems immediately.
- Fixed Route – Starts at $24 and is $25 after training
- Paratransit – Starts at $17.50 and is $18 after training
Requirements
Knowledge required by the position:
- Knowledge of geography of the city and locations of major buildings.
- Knowledge of safety procedures.
- Knowledge/experience in using organizational and time management practices.
- Skilled in both verbal and written communication.
- Skilled in problem solving and decision making.
- Skilled in excellent customer service
- Skilled in multi-tasking.
- Skilled in map reading and interpreting route schedules.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to cope with stressful situations.
- Ability to verbally utilize a two-way radio.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with individuals of various ethnic
backgrounds.
Work Environment:
- Individuals are required to work independently, multi-tasking.
- Required to work various shifts to include overtime, if necessary.
- Must abide by safety procedures and practices in varying traffic and weather conditions to provide a smooth safe ride for passengers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 25 years of age at time of employment.
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Must have a clean driving record.
- Must pass a physical examination as required in U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
Summary
Safely operate transit buses of varying sizes, transporting customers within routes established by the Public Transit System in accordance with applicable Transit Management work rules, policies, and procedures. Includes adherence to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and other state and local traffic laws. Must meet Department of Transportation Physical Standards.
