Summary

The Controller is an in-office position responsible for overseeing the entire accounting and finance function along with a small team. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, effective cost control, and timely project-based financial insight. High performers in this role will be well organized, and ground engaged with a willingness to be hands-on in day-to-day operations. 

Responsibilities 

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, job costing, and fixed assets
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes
  • Maintain cash flow forecasts and support working capital management
  • Coordinate external reviews, audits, and tax filings with CPA firms

Construction Accounting & Job Costing

  • Oversee job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion reporting
  • Track project costs, margins, and profitability by job
  • Support project managers with cost reports, forecasts, and variance analysis
  • Ensure accurate billing, retainage tracking, and lien compliance

Payroll, Compliance & Controls

  • Oversee weekly payroll, including prevailing wage compliance where applicable
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Maintain internal controls and accounting policies
  • Manage insurance renewals, bonding support, and compliance reporting

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, train, and develop a small accounting team
  • Allocate work, set priorities, and ensure cross-coverage
  • Improve reporting, workflows, and documentation
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to ownership and leadership

Skills & Abilities

  • Hands-on, detail-oriented leadership style
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
  • Clear communication with financial and non-financial stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Construction or job-cost accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Relevant certifications a plus
  • Experience in civil construction, utilities, or excavation a plus
  • Familiarity with bonding, retainage, and long-term contracts
