About the Department

Work Schedule: Up to 40 hours per week. Schedule Varies and may occur Monday-Sunday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. This is a seasonal position that is anticipated to continue to October 31st, based on operational needs.

This position is assigned to the Grounds team and is responsible for interacting with beach visitors and maintaining public beach access points. Duties focus on facility and parking lot cleanliness (emptying trash receptacles, removing litter) and basic upkeep of facilities used by the public (i.e., repairing or replacing boards on decks and boardwalks, repairing or replacing shower heads.) Other duties are as described below and as assigned.


JOB SUMMARY
The Beach Attendant is responsible for performing work as part of the City’s Leave Only Footprints program (LOF). This position will assist with the implementation and operation of this program, as well as other programs and initiatives within the Coastal Resources Department. Work includes removal of marine debris and trash; public education and outreach, vehicle/UTV operation and maintenance; materials handling and recycling; other duties as assigned. May conduct educational programs and make public appearances. This position is also expected to assist and support the other department divisions and programs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Monitors beaches and shoreline activity for enforcement issues, safety concerns, and debris.
  2. Completes required reports and maintains records, such as progress; accident reports, wildlife related incidents, and documentation of interactions, debris/trash observed, collected and discarded.
  3. Serves as an educational ambassador for the Coastal Resources programs such as LOF. May deliver presentations or attend public events.
  4. Maintains inventory of related equipment and supplies.
  5. Interacts with the public, beach vendors, and others about rules violations.
  6. Assists with City wide events and educational field trips.
  7. Assists with wildlife incidents as needed.
  8. Performs basic custodial, maintenance, and light construction tasks.
  9. Removes debris, abandoned equipment, and other items from beaches and/or waterways.
  10. Handles, sorts, shreds, and processes collected materials as needed for recycling or disposal.

  3. Verbal skills to communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, and the general public.
  4. Math skills to perform basic math to maintain financial and activity records.
  5. Computer skills to prepare reports.
  6. Knowledge of local waterways, roadways, and beaches.
  7. Ability to safely and effectively operate a 4x4 motor vehicle in an off-road environment in proximity to people and obstacles.
  8. Ability to operate an ATV or UTV safely.
  9. Ability to operate common hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely.
  10. Knowledge of city and departmental policies, rules, and procedures.
  11. Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with established policies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Current and valid driver’s license.
  3. Possess and maintain a current Red Cross First Aid/CPR and AED certification (training will be provided).
  4. Willing to work overtime, non-standard hours, weekends and holidays as required to complete work assignments.

Employees must be extremely safety-conscious. Employees work in extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
