About the Department

Reporting to the Water & Wastewater Superintendent under general supervision, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair a wastewater treatment plant and contributing lift stations ensuring compliance with all Federal, State and Local requirements.   The operator performs skilled work to control physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment processes.   The operator is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade.  Work at this level is performed with considerable independence within the framework of established practices, processes, and procedures.

Position Duties

  • Monitors the performance of all equipment, gauges, and meters in the treatment plant and lift stations; records statistical data concerning plant operations; maintains, operates, repairs and replaces equipment as necessary.
  • Monitors plant SCADA equipment, records data and adjusts processes as necessary.
  • Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical, biological characteristics of wastewater required in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements; gathers and tests wastewater samples for DMR reporting.
  • Performs quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analyses; evaluates procedures and results for accuracy and determines appropriate methods.  Assures that plant operates within required standards.
  • Calibrates or repairs lab instrumentation, and control equipment.
  • Performs start up and shut down functions on a variety of equipment including pumping systems, chemical feed systems, air supply systems, methane gas systems and sludge dewatering systems.
  • Operates and maintains lift stations; cleans wet wells and operates pumps and valves to control and adjust flow for treatment processes.
  • Completes basic repairs to lift station and wastewater treatment plant equipment.
  • Operates tools and landscaping equipment that assists with groundskeeping and maintenance.
  • Maintains drawings and schematics of electrical and other systems in the treatment plant; monitors performance of electrical systems, circuits or equipment related to their responsibilities.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation schedule that includes weekend, holiday, and evening work coverage as necessary.
  • Performs housekeeping when necessary or directed.
  • Maintains process operation log sheets and other records to assist in the preparation of operations reports.
  • Practices safety awareness at all times.
  • Daily use of computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email, and database software performing work assignments.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent
  • Experience in a wastewater or water treatment facility, OR any relevant combination of education and experience including mechanical maintenance, plumbing, machinery operation, agriculture, or any of the construction fields.

Other Qualifications

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: 

  • The ability to obtain basic level certification for all plant subclasses appropriate to the Port Washington WWTP within 24 months of hire.
