About the Role

This is a full-time remote role for an Applied Scientist (not a Data Scientist). You will be responsible for research and development of novel machine learning techniques to improve the security and safety of large language models. You will continuously survey SOTA research in adversarial ML, red-teaming, and LLMs; you will pursue independent research to develop patents and write papers for peer-reviewed publication and top-tier conferences; you will develop small-scale prototypes (production-quality code nevertheless) and collaborate with ML engineers and cloud services developers to transform your prototypes into large-scale cloud services. Importantly, you will focus obsessively on the needs of customers -- AI developers at enterprises and startups who are customizing LLMs -- and let them guide the direction of your research.

That means diving deep into problems that matter to your customers and delivering pragmatic solutions that stand the test of time. You have a strong analytical mind, you approach challenges with a problem-solving stance, and you have the grit and resilience to deal with setbacks. You find this work meaningful because you you feel it in your bones that we need to build trust into AI/ML systems in order to realize their transformative potential. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph D in ML, NLP, Neural Networks
• 4+ years industry experience as an Applied Scientist or equivalent job
• 4+ years experience developing deep learning models or systems
• 4+ years research experience with NLP models or systems
• 2+ year research experience with LLMs or systems for LLM operations
• 1+ year research experience with LLM failure modes
• Demonstrable proficiency in programming with Python, Java, or C++ (GitHub link appreciated)

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with SOTA research in adversarial ML, LLM red-teaming, and responsible AI
• Commitment to pragmatic development of trustworthy AI/ML
• Experience working with cloud services on AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Familiarity with software engineering best practices (version control, code review, testing, and deployment)
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with software developers, product managers, and business leaders
• Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills (writing samples appreciated)
