Job Description

Examples of work performed in this classification may include, but are not limited to the following:

Assigns job duties and evaluates the work performance of subordinate employees.       

Ensures that staff adheres to work schedules in providing facility coverage in compliance with approved agency policies and procedures.    

Provides direction to staff, including daily guidance as they perform their duties and through the completion of performance evaluations.    

Supervises and coordinates the work of Youth Care Professionals’ and Seniors in a detention facility.

Monitors youth participation in daily activities including social development and instructional activities.   

Restores and maintains order.  

Conducts discussion with youths about adjustment and provides insight into responsible behavior and attitudes.

Prepares/reviews behavioral reports of youth within the facility, maintaining records of incidents and adjustment to treatment services.         

Writes reports, maintains logs, and enters data in computerized databases.       

Ensures compliance with all rules and regulations while maintaining safety and security at the facility, including physically subduing or restraining youths who are a danger to themselves or others.

Makes on-site visits and inspections.   

Assists in development of policies and procedures as related to security and youth care by complying with consultation requests from supervisory staff members of other disciplines or from administration and serving on committees as appointed.      

Assists with special projects as requested by supervisor or administration.        

Provides on-the-job training to subordinate employees or assigns individuals to appropriate educational programs.        

Develops and serves as instructor in educational programs, both inside and outside of the facility, as requested.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university and two (2) years of professional experience in an administrative capacity.

Or

An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with (4) four years of law enforcement or corrections, or juvenile detention or corrections experience.

Or

A high school diploma and (8) eight years of law enforcement or corrections, or juvenile detention or corrections experience.

And

Possession of a valid Mississippi driver’s license.
