Job Description

Casella Construction is seeking to hire a highly skilled and experienced Senior Heavy Construction Laborer to join our Heavy Civil Construction team in multiple locations across Vermont.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of experience in heavy civil construction, including at least 3 years of specialized pipefitting experience. This role requires expertise in proper installations of valves, pipe installations, construction grades, and backfill. The Senior Level Heavy Construction Laborer will act as a leader, motivating the team by example and ensuring high-quality work standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Perform pipefitting tasks, including the installation of valves and pipes, ensuring all work meets industry standards and specifications.
  • Execute proper construction grades and backfill techniques to ensure stability and compliance with project requirements.
  • Guides other laborers on tasks and equipment.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance of all tools and equipment.
  • Operates support equipment (skid steer, mini roller, haul truck).
  • Spreads gravel, asphalt, and other materials over surfaces.
  • Installs water and or sewer lines as assigned or directed.
  • Follows instructions verbally and in written form and perform tasks with little to no supervision.
  • Lead and motivate the construction team, setting a positive example through work ethic, safety practices, and attention to detail.
  • Perform pipefitting tasks, including the installation of valves and pipes, ensuring all work meets industry standards and specifications.
  • Execute proper construction grades and backfill techniques to ensure stability and compliance with project requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to pipe installations and construction grades.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior laborers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Conduct inspections and quality checks to ensure all installations are performed correctly and safely.
  • Completes daily paperwork.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Training requirements, both in person and online, as needed or required.

Winter Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Requires the ability to plow snow during the winter months across various locations in the state of Vermont and New Hampshire.
  • Must be able to operate snow removal equipment such as snowplows, salt spreaders, and snow blowers.
  • Must be proficient in handling both light and heavy-duty vehicles equipped for snow removal, ensuring safe and clear passage on roads and pathways.
  • Must be able to work in cold weather conditions and perform physical labor as needed. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in heavy civil construction.
  • At least 3 years of specialized experience in pipefitting.
  • Proven expertise in proper installations of valves, pipe installations, construction grades, and backfill.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in construction.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Proven experience with HDPE welding and water/sewer pipe installation.
  • Experience with concrete finishing, building demolition, jobsite layouts, and grading.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and follow directions.
  • Ability to remain flexible as assignments change.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to work some weekends and/or nights, when needed.
  • Must be able to travel out of town for a day and/or a week.
  • Ability to participate in regulatory trainings (First Aid/CPR, OSHA 10, Flagging, Spotter).
  • HAZWOPER 40-hour certification.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols.
  • Proficiency in math and reading.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and climb inclines for the duration of the shift.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather.

Hourly Hiring Range: $27.41/hr. - $32.00/hr.

This range reflects the base pay we reasonably expect to offer for this position at the time of posting, considering current market conditions and industry benchmarks.  

Final and individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.
