The Senior Millwright Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all millwright-related activities associated with the installation, alignment, commissioning, and startup of chiller plant systems supporting a direct-to-chip liquid-cooled data center. This role ensures mechanical systems are installed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with design specifications, quality standards, and commissioning requirements. The position requires deep expertise in rotating equipment, large-scale hydronic systems, and mission-critical environments.

Job requirements

  • Millwright journeyman certification or equivalent trade training preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, construction management, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in millwright or mechanical installation, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated experience leading field crews and managing subcontractors on complex construction projects.
  • Proven experience with large-scale chiller plants and hydronic systems.
  • Strong background in rotating equipment installation and precision alignment (laser alignment preferred).
  • Experience on mission-critical projects (e.g., data centers, hospitals, industrial facilities).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and equipment installation manuals.
  • OSHA 30 certification required.
  • Experience with data center construction, particularly liquid cooling or direct-to-chip systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with CDU systems and high-density thermal management preferred.
  • Knowledge of commissioning processes (Cx) and TAB (Testing, Adjusting, Balancing) preferred.
  • Experience with BIM coordination and clash detection tools preferred.
Other Important Requirements:
  • Pre-employment screening, including background check and substance testing may be required according to company policies.
  • Must provide own steel-toed work boots; other PPE will be supplied.
  • Must be able to reliably commute to the work site daily or have plans to relocate before starting work.
  • Must be comfortable working a rotational schedule, which includes day and night shifts as well as weekend work, based on project needs.
  • Employees working night shifts will receive a 15% premium added to their hourly rate only for hours worked during night shifts.

Job responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision
  • Lead and supervise millwright crews, subcontractors, and specialty vendors on-site
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for mechanical equipment installation and precision alignment
  • Plan and coordinate daily work activities, manpower, and crew assignments
  • Promote and enforce site safety standards and a zero-incident culture
Installation & Execution
  • Oversee installation of major mechanical systems, including:
    • Chillers (air-cooled and/or water-cooled) 
    • Cooling towers and heat rejection systems 
    • Pumps (primary, secondary, and tertiary loops) 
    • Heat exchangers, including CDU interfaces 
    • Large-bore piping systems and valve assemblies 
  • Ensure proper rigging, setting, leveling, grouting, and precision alignment of rotating equipment
  • Verify tolerances, clearances, and installation procedures meet OEM specifications
Direct-to-Chip Cooling Integration
  • Coordinate installation interfaces between chiller plant systems and Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs)
  • Ensure proper integration between facility water systems and IT liquid cooling loops
  • Support pressure testing, system flushing, and cleanliness requirements for liquid cooling systems
  • Collaborate with controls teams on thermal management strategies and system sequencing
Scheduling & Planning
  • Develop and maintain installation schedules in coordination with project management
  • Identify and mitigate schedule risks, including equipment delivery and site constraints
  • Coordinate activities across trades, including pipefitters, electricians, controls, and commissioning teams
Quality Assurance & Commissioning
  • Ensure all work complies with project specifications, codes, and QA/QC standards
  • Lead mechanical pre-functional checklists (PFCs) and installation verification activities
  • Support system startup, testing, balancing (TAB), and commissioning activities
  • Identify and resolve installation issues, non-conformances, and punch list items
Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce OSHA and site-specific safety requirements
  • Conduct toolbox talks, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and safety audits
  • Ensure proper use of rigging equipment, lifting plans, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain daily reports, installation logs, and progress tracking
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, P&IDs, and equipment submittals
  • Coordinate redlines and support development of as-built documentation

 Compensation 
  • The expected hourly range for this role is $55.00 to $60.00 USD. 
    • Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications. 
  • Per Diem amount of $155.00 and project allowance, when applicable
  • 15% night-shift premium for eligible roles, when applicable
  • Overtime compensation for non-exempt workers for hours worked over 40 per week
  • Relocation and Living-out-allowance (as applicable and based on successful candidate circumstances)
