Position Summary:
The Healthcare Data Analysis Intern is a temporary position to be filled by an under-graduate or graduate college student. From the Intern’s point of view, it provides real-life, referenceable, experience within a fully functioning IT department. From NYPC’s perspective, the intention is to perform data anlysis project(s) that can be completed within the allotted period and are either directly usable or form the foundation for future development. The project(s) will require technical skills that the Intern possesses due to their college work.
During a previous internship engagement, NYPC established a rudimentary data warehouse that is currently primarily used for financial analysis. In 2026, the Healthcare Data Analysis Intern’s work will be focused on making the warehouse more robust and expanding its use for clinical and operational data analysis, possibly integrating additional data sources to supplement the existing data. Developing and operationalizing various reports and dashboards will be a significant part of the role. We welcome ideas to innovate with the platform including alternative architectures, use of visualization tools, and AI.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meet regularly with the Senior Director of Information Systems and other stakeholders to agree scope and daily tasks.
- Work with clinical and operational teams both in-person and virtually to elicit and clarify requirements, perform validation and testing, and drive adoption.
- Develop an overall plan for the assigned project(s) including expected milestones with dates.
- Install and configure all necessary development tools required to perform the project(s)
- Maintain documentation in Confluence and JIRA for the agreed project(s) to include at minimum, project plan, technical specifications and reference material, regular status reports, risks and issues log, testing and release plans.
- Provide complete transparency of activities with the IT team.
- Attend team meetings as agreed with the Senior Director of Information Systems
- Work collaboratively with IT, finance, clinical teams, and other stakeholders to resolve project issues.
- Comply with all New York Proton Center policies related to Privacy Rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
- Opportunity to shadow other IT team members and understand their tasks.
- Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree for a relevant subject, such as Computer Science or Healthcare Informatics.
- 1-2 years competency in Microsoft SQL Server plus SQL scripting skills.
- 1-2 years of competence with developing in modern programming language(s) such as Python or node.js.
- Knowledge of gathering, analyzing, and defining business and functional requirements and designing/re-engineering IT databases and systems
- Experience with data visualization tools and/or AI technologies
- Theoretical knowledge of data warehouse design preferred.
- Advanced skills in general computing (Windows 11, Office 365, Web applications, iPhone and/or Android, authentication technologies) preferred.
