School Assistant Principal / Office Manager – Elementary School

Position Summary

This combined role integrates the educational leadership responsibilities of an Assistant Principal with the administrative and operational duties of a School Office Manager, serving as a key support to the principal in ensuring a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment. 

Core Responsibilities

  • Educational Leadership & Student Support
    • Assists the Principal in establishing a positive, safe, and productive school climate conducive to learning. 
    • Oversees student discipline, attendance, and behavior, implementing and enforcing school rules and policies. 
    • Manages student admissions, referrals, and retention processes, including coordination with special education and support services. 
    • Coordinates student activities, events, and programs, including field trips, assemblies, and extracurriculars. 
    • Supports teachers and staff through instructional leadership, classroom observations, and professional development initiatives. 
    • Collaborates with the Educational Management Team and Collaborative Problem-Solving Team to ensure appropriate programming for all students. 
  • Administrative & Operational Management
    • Serves as the primary administrative leader in the absence of the Principal, managing day-to-day operations. 
    • Supervises and evaluates all school staff, including teachers, aides, custodians, and clerical personnel. 
    • Handles personnel functions: recruitment, hiring, training, performance appraisals, and conflict resolution.
    • Manages school budget and resources, including ordering supplies, managing activity funds, and overseeing facility maintenance. 
    • Coordinates substitute teacher assignments and ensures compliance with certification and screening requirements. 
    • Maintains accurate student and staff records, including grades, attendance, and IEPs, using a computer-based record system. 
  • Communication & Community Engagement
    • Serves as a primary liaison between the school, parents, guardians, community organizations, and the PTA.
    • Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns from families and stakeholders in a timely and equitable manner. 
    • Organizes and leads parent-teacher conferences, Back to School Night, and community events.
    • Develops and distributes school communications, including newsletters, handbooks, and website content. 
  • Compliance & Planning
    • Ensures adherence to federal, state, and district policies, including safety, security, and special education mandates. 
    • Analyzes student achievement data to inform school improvement plans and instructional strategies. 
    • Plans and implements school-wide systems and rituals that promote high expectations and student success. 
    • Coordinates logistics such as bus schedules, food services, and facility use. 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: Master’s degree in educational administration, leadership, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of teaching experience, with at least 2 years in a school leadership role (e.g., assistant principal, department chair).
  • Certification: Valid state administrative certification (e.g., Maryland Administrator I, Pennsylvania Administrative Certificate).
  • Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities; proficiency in office software and data management; ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Personal Attributes: Patience, empathy, flexibility, and commitment to equity and student success.
