Job Description

1. Clinical and research components: For the program includes 80% dedicated to clinical teaching and 20% research in year 1 and 50-70% research, 30-50% clinic in second year (schedule individualized on year 1. Patient care responsibilities include daily outpatient management of neuroimmunology patients with a broad spectrum of diseases including Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromyelitis Optica, MOGAD, Neurosarcoidosis, Autoimmune Encephalitis, Systemic Autoimmune disorders affecting CNS. In year one this is mainly under the supervision of attending physicians, but they have a supervised primary clinic as well.
2. Trainee’s Supervisory and patient care responsibilities: The fellow will have a designated supervised clinic that will escalate slowly and dependent on the fellows ease and knowledge. Clinic supervision is shared between attending physicians and speed of escalating responsibilities will depend on performance and evaluations from supervising attendings. Fellows participate as well in attending clinic in subspecialty clinic like the Encephalitis clinic and inpatient consults. Fellows will participate in clinical evaluations of enrolled clinical trial patients as well. Depending on fellow’s interest, clinical rotation at the Shepperd Center happens in first year of training.
3. Clinical procedural requirements: There are no clinical procedures that the fellow needs to gain expertise in. Fellow may be required to do lumbar punctures if needed.
4. Didactic sessions and teaching methods used to ensure program goals and objectives are met: Didactic components include bi-monthly NeuroImmunology/Neuroradiology video conference, bi-monthly Neuroimmunology Academic conference, bi-monthly Journal club, weekly neurology grand rounds and monthly research lab meetings They also attend national meetings (CMSC, ECTRIMS, ACTRIMS, AAN)were they are expected to present poster or abstract at least once during their 2 year fellowship.
5. If the program is more than twelve months in duration, describe the progression in responsibilities by PGY level: The majority of the fellows come in as PGY-5 and the responsibilities are supervised clinics with the various neuroimmunology physicians as well as an escalated independent clinic that has supervision of a designated attending. Also leading the various video conferences in which they facilitate each month. PGY-6 require a more independent clinic structure with attending supervision only as an as needed or after clinic review of patients seen and confirmation of an adequate plan
