    LOCATION: Walker-Grant Middle School and James Monroe High School

     

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Gifted Education Resource Teacher provides leadership, coordination, and direct support for gifted education services at both Walker-Grant Middle School and James Monroe High School. This role supports the academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted learners through instructional services, program coordination, collaboration with teachers and administrators, and communication with students and families. This role provides instructional services to students who have been identified for gifted services, provides training and resource support to teachers and administrators, and participates in the gifted screening and identification process outlined in the FCPS gifted local plan. The position also serves as a liaison for Governor's School programming and other advanced academic opportunities.


    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    INSTRUCTION

    • Meet and instruct at the times designated
    • Plan a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students at the middle and high school levels.
    • Provide gifted education services to identified middle school students through gifted seminar instructional classes, and via push-in differentiated services in core classes.
    • Plan and facilitate enrichment of opportunities and field trips for gifted students at the secondary level.
    • Assesses the accomplishments of gifted seminar students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.

       

    GIFTED EDUCATION

    • Administer gifted screening and assessment processes for middle school students, including sixth-grade screeners and fall/spring testing.
    • Attend Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and department meetings to support collaboration and integration of gifted strategies.
    • Design and deliver professional development sessions for faculty on gifted education, differentiation, and advanced learner needs.
    • Participate in IEP, 504, child study, and other problem-solving meetings for students who are gifted or twice exceptional.

       

    RESOURCE

    • Coordinate information sessions, application processes, and communications for high school students and families.
    • Attend Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and department meetings to support collaboration and integration of gifted strategies.
    • Serve as a liaison between James Monroe High School, Governor's School staff, and partner divisions, including Fredericksburg City Public Schools, as applicable.
    • Monitor the progress of Governor's School students and provide support as needed.
    • Attend and support school and division meetings and committees.
    • Collaborate with lead teachers, counselors, administrators, librarians, special education staff, and Governor's School personnel to address academic, scheduling, and student support needs.
    • Assist students and staff with scheduling concerns created by participation in advanced academic programs.
    • Support applications for Summer Residential Governor's School, World Language Academy, and other gifted or advanced academic opportunities.
    • Consult with classroom teachers regarding the needs of gifted students and provide instructional support and strategies for differentiation.
    • Work with gifted students outside of formal programming as needed to address academic or social-emotional concerns.
    • Support implementation of enrichment opportunities, instructional innovation, and student-centered projects related to gifted education.

     

    GENERAL

    • Use appropriate materials, technology, and resources in a manner that promotes the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
    • Implement a classroom management policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
    • Ensure the adequate and safe supervision of students.
    • Manage classroom procedures to maximize academic learning time.
    • Establish and maintain positive rapport with students.
    • Motivate students to achieve maximum potential.
    • Comply with and support school and division regulations and policies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrators or division leadership.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
    • Successful teaching experience is required.
    • Experience working with gifted learners or advanced academic programs preferred.
    • Valid driver's license may be required for travel between sites.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master's degree in education, gifted education, curriculum and instruction, or related field preferred.
    • Gifted education endorsement preferred, or willingness to obtain endorsement/required training.
    • Experience coordinating student programs, facilitating professional development, and collaborating across multiple stakeholder groups preferred

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, and use hands for instructional and clerical tasks.
    • May need to lift, carry, or move instructional materials and supplies up to 25 pounds.
    • Must be able to travel between assigned job sites.
    • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to work on a computer monitor for extended periods.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

    • Work is performed in a school setting at two locations: Walker-Grant Middle School and James Monroe High School.
    • Environment may include classrooms, offices, meeting spaces, and occasional off-site activities or events.
    • Position requires frequent interaction with students, staff, families, and community partners.
    • Work may involve interruptions and multiple priorities in a fast-paced educational environment.

     

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

    • Seven (7) hours, thirty (30) minutes per day, with additional duties and times assigned as needed at the discretion of the principal or supervisors.
    • Salary and benefits established by the Fredericksburg City Schools School Board.
    • Travel between assigned sites is required.
    • Work schedules and duties will be established by the division in accordance with school and program needs.

       

    EVALUATION:

    Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations for licensed personnel.
