The Goodhue County Education District (GCED) provides collaborative educational services to the six member school districts located in Goodhue County in southeastern Minnesota. Across the county, GCED supports approximately 7,000 students. The district employs over 150 staff members and is recognized for its strong partnerships with partnering school districts and community service agencies to deliver specialized and innovative programming. Core services include a Federal Setting IV Special Education program, an 18–21 Transition Program, Title III/Multilingual Learner programming, Alternative Education programs, and regional support for Perkins/Career and Technical Education. GCED also operates 5RiversOnline, a comprehensive online learning program, and provides specialized services such as Early Childhood Special Education and low-incidence disability support, including Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Blind/Visually Impaired services.

Building-wide Substitute/Crisis Management

Position Purpose
The Building-Wide Substitute provides
instructional and supervisory coverage for staff
absences throughout the school building and
assists administration and student services teams
in responding to behavioral, emotional, or safety
crises. This role supports a safe learning
environment and ensures continuity of instruction
and student support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Substitute Coverage
-Provide classroom coverage for absent teachers,
paraprofessionals, or support staff.
-Follow lesson plans left by the regular teacher and
maintain classroom routines.
-Supervise students and maintain a productive
learning environment.
-Assist students with assignments and
instructional activities.
-Communicate important classroom events or
concerns to the returning teacher.
Crisis Response Support
-Respond quickly to student behavioral or
emotional crises when called by staff or
administration.
-Assist in de-escalating situations using trained
strategies (e.g., PCM, Ukeru, restorative practices,
trauma-informed approaches).
-Support restrictive procedures when necessary.
-Help supervise students in calm-down spaces or
intervention rooms.
-Document incidents according to school or
district procedures.
Student Support & Supervision
-Monitor hallways, lunchrooms, and common areas
as assigned.
-Build positive relationships with students to help
prevent behavioral issues.
-Assist with behavior intervention plans (BIPs) or
support plans when needed.
-Provide support during transitions, arrival,
dismissal, and high-traffic times.
Collaboration
-Work closely with administrators, counselors,
social workers, and special education staff.
-Communicate student concerns or safety issues to
appropriate staff.
-Participate in crisis team meetings or debriefs if
required.
Additional Duties
-Assist with testing supervision, field trips, or
special events.
-Support intervention programs or in-school
support rooms.
-Perform other duties assigned by administration
to maintain school operations.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Minnesota Teaching License (any area) or
eligible to apply for an Out-of-Field Permission.
