Job Description

Position Title: Research Associate, Pre-Clinical Technologist 2

Department: 9010|NIRC Administration

Responsibilities:

The Research Associate, Pre-Clinical Technologist 2, works
in conjunction with the Research Coordinator to support and oversee research
assignments in nonhuman primate (NHP) biomedical studies. This position
involves coordinating and supervising the work of research associates,
pre-clinical technologists, and laboratory technicians to ensure compliance
with study protocols. The employee will contribute to training, documentation,
planning, and facilitation of both basic and applied research, while applying advanced
knowledge and professional judgment to ensure the welfare of study animals and
the integrity of research outcomes.


Key Responsibilities:

-Assist in the planning, directing, and coordinating of research assignments in
conjunction with the Research Coordinator.
-Supervise and instruct research associates, pre-clinical technologists, and
laboratory technicians engaged in research projects to ensure adherence to
study protocols.
-Contribute to personnel training and maintain accurate research documentation.
-Perform and document scheduled tasks in compliance with PHS-funded research
protocols, university research projects, and pharmaceutical/biotechnological
sponsor requirements.
-Utilize advanced knowledge to perform diversified dose administration, sample
collections, and test system observations to assess the effects of test
articles.
-Develop protocol-specific forms and ensure studies are conducted using
consistent practices aligned with protocols, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.
-Make informed, independent decisions in assessing NHP living environments and
behaviors during nonclinical biomedical studies.
-Communicate effectively with husbandry, veterinary, and behavioral personnel
to ensure study subjects’ needs are met.
-Troubleshoot procedures and document/report abnormalities, including adverse
responses, behavioral variances, and signs of illness or distress.
-Acclimate NHPs for alert dosing and sample collection using primate
restrainer systems.
-Operate specialized equipment, perform preventative maintenance, calibrate as
needed, and record data accurately.
-Adapt to various study environments and biosafety levels while following
biosafety, bloodborne pathogen, and exposure control protocols.
-Perform all tasks in a manner that minimizes risk of cross-contamination of
study areas, test articles, and subjects.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree or related field with scientific emphasis
- 5 years’ experience in a contract research setting, assisting in conduct of
research protocols may be substituted for the degree
- 4 years’ experience in a research facility and/or veterinary/animal care
facility as a lead worker, supervisor, and project lead (or equivalent)

Preferred Qualifications:
- AALAS Technician certification (or equivalent)

Skills, Abilities, Etc.:

- Advance knowledge in a field of science to independently conduct protocol
mandated research procedures in nonhuman primate animal studies in an
AAALAC-accredited facility.
