Description

At DoMyOwn.com, there is one thing that drives our business — satisfied customers. We have an opening for an experienced eCommerce Software Engineering Manager to join the DoMyOwn team and help deliver on this mission.

DoMyOwn, a subsidiary of Central Garden & Pet, is one of the largest online retailers of professional-grade pest control, lawn care, gardening, animal care products, and equipment. The eCommerce Engineering team at DoMyOwn supports a suite of technologies that power our customer experience and enable our internal teams across the business.

The eCommerce Software Engineering Manager is a hands-on leadership position that combines people leadership, technical oversight, and development of eCommerce applications built in PHP using the Laravel framework. Successful candidates for this role will have prior success growing and developing engineering organizations, supervising teams of software engineers and QA professionals, planning and delivering successful projects that meet established goals, removing technical challenges preventing projects from being completed on time and within budget, and working with key stakeholders across the organization to provide the best possible eCommerce experience for customers.

As the eCommerce Software Engineering Manager, you will manage and motivate our team of full stack software engineers and QA as they support eCommerce products across websites, marketing technologies, data analytics, warehouse and supply chain technologies, and other business-critical systems. As the engineering leader of a small growing team, you will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating software development, quality assurance, deployments, infrastructure oversight, server management, maintenance, and production support across our engineering function.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Development Excellence: Maintain software development practices that are scalable, repeatable, and aligned with high engineering standards. Ensure development is cohesive, maintaining a broad view of all applications and systems when planning and building new enhancements and features. Contribute to the development of new features, system enhancements, code reviews, and ongoing maintenance as needed.

  • Continuous Improvement: Develop processes and ways of working that help the Engineering team collaborate and drive best-in-class results. Maintain high standards by fostering and executing a culture of continuous improvement, including proper testing, quality assurance practices, unit testing standards, testing frameworks, release readiness, and operational discipline.

  • Project Management: Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritize work, design solutions, and define timelines, scope, and deliverables for new features, functionality, backlog items, integrations, and defects. Ensure clear goals, priorities, and project expectations are communicated across the team.

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers and QA professionals. Establish clear expectations, provide coaching and feedback, support career development, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and ownership.

  • Quality Assurance Oversight: Partner with QA to ensure strong testing coverage, regression planning, defect management, and release validation processes are in place. Promote shared quality ownership across the engineering team to support high-confidence releases.

  • Deployments and Production Support: Oversee deployment processes and release activities to ensure changes are delivered safely and reliably. Ensure the team is successful in maintaining a customer-centric standard of excellence both pre- and post-deployment, including issue triage, incident response, root cause analysis, and production support.

  • Infrastructure and Server Oversight: Provide leadership and oversight for the environments and infrastructure supporting the company’s applications, including servers, hosting, monitoring, uptime, system health, and configuration management. Partner with internal and external resources as needed to maintain secure, stable, and scalable systems.

  • Application and Integration Ownership: Oversee the systems and integrations that support website content, pricing, inventory, shipping, fraud workflows, customer experience, and internal administration. Ensure these systems remain reliable, maintainable, and aligned with business needs.

  • Organizational Development: Continue to develop and nurture the Engineering team culture. Work with the team to define and iterate on process improvements that allow for quick, accurate, and sustainable goal execution.

  • Talent Development: Utilize experience with different software engineering disciplines and focus areas to lead, inspire, motivate, mentor, and develop the Engineering team.
