Job Description

About the Department

The purpose of this position is to review and verify the validity of applications submitted for properties qualifying (or not) for exemptions; assist in the approval process for multi-lot discounts, builder’s exemptions, and agricultural; and process and review appeals for the Hilton Head Island Police Fee. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Position Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Provides support for the front desk; assists front office and other coworkers with taxpayers’ concerns regarding legal residence issues.
  • Responds to in-person, email, and phone inquiries; provides information for exemption and mail documents for customer requests.
  • Reviews, researches, and approves legal residence exemption applications.
  • Checks for multiple property ownership.
  • Updates database information and address information as needed.
  • Review DHEC, South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) exemption list, and SCDOR exemption letters entered as received.
  • Sorts, processes, and files applications; prepares refund packets (preapproval and background checks); and organizes and files incoming correspondences.
  • Collaborates with other coworkers, counties, and states as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent. Education supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completing one (1) year of college.
  • Two (2) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Other Qualifications

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
