JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: School Social Worker
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education and Building Level Administration

EVALUATOR: Director of Special Education or Building Level Administration
BASIC FUNCTION:
Actively support students, parents and staff in addressing personal, emotional and social problems that
interfere with student success at school. Participate in the special education process including pre-referral,
evaluation, eligibility determination and intervention services as needed.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. Principles of social work, prevention, intervention and case management.
2. Principles and techniques of interviewing, screening and assessment.
3. Principles and techniques of advocacy.
4. Principles and techniques of crisis intervention.
5. Theories and skills for individual, family and group counseling.
6. Theories and skills for consultation/collaboration.
7. Theories of child development including the physical, intellectual, social and emotional growth
patterns of students.
8. Current social and economic issues, including social/cultural diversity.
9. Individual and group behavior and the effect of social/economic factors on individuals, families, and

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Promote early identification and provide interventions/strategies for students who have special needs
(cognitive, behavioral, social, emotional, medical and familial) that interfere with school success.
This includes participation in building level, district level, Section 504, special education and IEP
review teams to help identify, diagnose and remediate individual students with special needs. In
addition, classroom observations for students referred to the review team.
2. Participate in case study evaluations to determine eligibility for special education services. This
includes conducting comprehensive nonbiased assessments and completion of social development
studies (e.g. medical history, developmental history, academic history, family history, adaptive
behavior, etc.). This may include reviewing and summarizing information from evaluations
completed by other schools, hospitals/clinic, DCFS, probation, counseling agencies, etc.

3. Assist with non-special education assessments, including but not limited to attention evaluation,
Section 504 eligibility, etc. and follow-up services.
4. Participate in IEP conferences, annual reviews, parent conferences, Section 504 meetings and other
meetings as appropriate. This includes analyzing and communicating results of assessment to
relevant staff, parent/guardian and student (when appropriate).
5. Maintain accurate, complete and appropriate records. This includes ethical practices in handling
confidential information.
6. Informing parents/guardians of their rights and the rights of students regarding assessment. This
includes advocating for parent/guardians and students regarding their rights and responsibilities.
7. Provide effective crisis intervention services, including assessment of possible child abuse. Make
mandatory reports to DCFS and QPD as appropriate. In addition, assessment of student behavior to
determine potential harm to self or others. Network with outside agencies as necessary (e.g. SASS,
safe-school, counseling, etc.).
8. Individual casework with students and/or families as needed. This includes direct service with non-
special education students after securing parental consent or as specified in a Section 504 Plan and
with special education students as stipulated in an IEP.
9. Awareness of and use of community and district resources. Serves as liaison among school,
student’s home and community agencies to build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships.
This includes referral of students/families to community agencies.
10. Serves as liaison within school buildings and within the district to help build and maintain positive
collaborative relationships.
11. Provide counseling support for students as prioritized by building level support teams. This includes
work with individual students and student groups.
12. Involvement with homebound, other one-on-one tutoring services and Teen Mother Program as
needed.
13. Home visits as needed (e.g. student safety, family needs such as financial, parent education, etc.).
14. Designs and makes presentations as requested based upon input from staff, parents, students and
community and based upon analysis of needs.
15. Serve as staff referral agent with District 172 and Special Education Cooperative regarding staff
need for counseling for self and/or family member.
16. Submit Medicaid claims to Special Education Cooperative and Quincy School District.
17. Inspect District property and observe activities on District property for unsafe conditions which may
lead to injury; correct any unsafe practices and conditions and to report all other potential safety
hazards to their supervisors.
18. May be certified in CPI
19. Work with supervisors to develop and maintain a program of safe conditions and practices for the
welfare of the students, faculty, employees, volunteers, visitors and other invitees.
20. Follow the safety guidelines specified in the Safety and Risk Management Plan for Quincy Pubic
School District #172.
