Position Summary
The position reporting to the Maintenance and Reliability Manager, is accountable for ensuring that control systems are designed, maintained, tested, and modified in accordance with good engineering practices (including IEC 61511 / ISA 84 standards where applicable) to achieve reliability targets with required risk reductions.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Reliability, Maintenance and Performance Management
• Define and continuously improve automation systems maintenance strategies, including proof test procedures, calibration standards, and test frequency optimization based on lifecycle reliability and risk
• Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, EHS/Process Safety, and IT to ensure automation systems reliability and cybersecurity
• Serve as site expert for various control systems
• Develop, implement, and optimize control logic, interlocks, and advanced control strategies to improve process safety, reliability, and efficiency
• Troubleshoot control system and instrumentation issues affecting process loops
• Maintain control system documentation, loop drawings, and change management records
• Possess an understanding and ability to “know what you don’t know”, and aid the site with cybersecurity readiness
• Provide instrument engineering support for various field devices and installations, including but not limited to: Engineered Control Valves, Various flow elements, VFDs, valves, transmitters, sensors, Level Gauges
Project and System Upgrades
• Lead and support PLC, DCS and SIS scope for capital projects and system modernization efforts
• Assist with definition of control narratives, I/O lists, and interface specifications for new installations and revamps
• Support FAT/SAT testing, commissioning, and startup of new process control systems
Operational Support & Continuous Improvement
• Provide real-time troubleshooting and optimization support to operations and maintenance
• Analyze process data and recommend control improvements to reduce variability and increase production efficiency
• Participate in on-call rotation for automation support
Process Safety and Compliance
• Ensure all automation changes comply with PSM, MOC, and ISA 84 / IEC 61511 requirements
• Serve as controls system SME in PHA, SILD, and SIS lifecycle activities, including SIF validation and proof testing
• Support alarm management, trip testing, and control system cybersecurity initiatives
• Exhibits and practices the Third Coast Way fundamental behaviors.
Knowledge and Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Automation, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Relevant experience, certifications and / or other qualifications may be considered in place of a degree.
• Strong understanding of process instrumentation and control loops
• Experience applying ISA 84 / IEC 61511 functional safety standards and supporting MOC/PSM activities
• Familiar with PLC/DCS network architecture, Modbus/OPC communication, and control system cybersecurity best practices
• Familiarity with automation technologies including PLCs, DCS, SIS, and HMI
• Proficient in various programming languages, ladder logic, function block, C&E, batch, and sequential function block
• Experience with Studio 5000 and Allen Bradley highly preferred; experience with DeltaV is highly preferred
• Experience with HMI software like Factorytalk View SE highly preferred
• Knowledge of datalogging software like OSI PI or FactoryTalk Historian is highly preferred
Work Experience:
• Minimum 5 years of process control experience in a large-scale chemical plant or batch processing facility
Skills and Competencies:
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills (“knowing what you don’t know” falls in this bucket)
• Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced production environment
• Commitment to a culture of safety, reliability, and continuous improvement
Physical Requirements
• 40% Office Setting, including sitting, some bending, walking and viewing.
• 60% outdoors in variable climates and temperatures. Includes walking, standing and climbing.
