About the Department

DEFINITION:
Group Fitness Instructors at the Brighton Recreation Center are responsible for conducting fitness classes in accordance with national certification organizations to ensure a safe, effective, and fun workout.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direction from the Fitness Coordinator and Fitness Supervisor.  Exercises supervision over fitness class participants and volunteers.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT / ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Evaluate and set class environment. Remove any obstructions from the workout area. Set up music and adjust it to the appropriate volume.
  • Conduct pre-class student screening. Address physical limitations or medical concerns.    Explain pulse-check, target heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion.
  • Instruct participants through an exercise program using the following guidelines
  • Demonstrate safe and effective class sequences. Utilize modification techniques for all fitness levels.
  • Educate participants using auditory and visual techniques.
  • Execute smooth sequencing and transitions throughout the entire class.
  • Use verbal and visual anticipatory cueing for movement transitions.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of one accredited Group Fitness Instructor or Personal Training certification (must be current)
  • Minimum of 1-year instructor experience preferred
  • CPR/AED certification (must be current or obtained within 3 months of hiring)
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license
  • Must pass criminal background check
Knowledge of:
  • Fitness safety standards and guidelines
  • Choreography design
  • Age respective class/exercise design
  • Skill modifications for various fitness levels
  • Hazards inherent to exercise and safety practices to minimize exposure
  • Emergency protocol
Abiilty to:
  • Understand community needs in fitness/wellness and evaluate activities according to those needs.
  • Monitor program compliance with related law, standards, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Effectively use quality customer service skills.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, other city employees and officials, community groups, the public and media representatives.
  • Follow policies and procedures related to attendance.
  • Substitute for other fitness instructors when needed.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as outlined by management.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the fitness field (attend workshops, read fitness publications, visit other fitness facility classes).
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of other instructors.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
  • Ability to perform moderate physical work. To lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally more.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, kneel, twist, and perform similar body movements.
  • Possesses hand / eye / foot coordination adequate to teach a fitness class.
  • Ability to talk and hear in person.
  • Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, recreation, and athletic programs in progress.
