About the Department
This temporary, part-time summer intern position is located in the Public Works Department at the City of Lynnwood. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an Engineering or Applied Sciences program. Working hours are flexible to accommodate class schedules if needed.
Individuals assigned to this position will assist in research, gather and prepare data and update various documents. Individuals will also perform administrative functions including compiling reports and graphics, copying, filing, faxing and retrieving information to support supervisory staff.
Position Duties
Includes but is not limited to such essential functions as listed below:
- Gather information and/or data relevant to engineering. Prepare data and reports for use and consideration by supervisory staff. Assist in providing information and performing research duties.
- Research in the field and assist in updating drawings and manuals.
- Operate Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Power Point and use cartographic software programs appropriately. May write some original correspondence and create charts and tables.
- Occasionally answer phones and speak with vendors.
- Perform various clerical functions including copying, filing, and distributing documents.
- Maintain department files, file, archive, and retrieve information in support of supervisory staff.
- Prepare maps and graphics, including GIS, GPS and computer generated, for use in publications, reports, presentations and office reference material.
- Maintain regular attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be currently enrolled in a two or four-year program with an emphasis in Engineering, Applied Sciences or a related field. Possess a valid State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Job Location and Equipment Utilized
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment, with exposure to seasonal heat, cold and extreme weather conditions. Exposure to traffic noises, traffic and wastewater fumes and other hazards and exposure to diseases may occur. Equipment utilized includes standard office equipment including personal computers with associated software and peripherals and general hand tools.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to prepare effective written reports/documentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and read engineering plans and calculations and other technical terminology.
- Ability to prepare maps and graphics.
- Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions at times and be able to maintain composure.
Physical Demands
- Visual acuity to read and review documents and plans and to conduct inspections.
- Hearing and speaking ability to effectively exchange information.
- Able to lift and carry heavy objects weighing at least 60 lbs.
- Ability to climb, walk over rough or uneven surfaces, crouch, turn/twist, push and pull, reach overhead and above the shoulders.
- Ability to drive a vehicle to conduct inspections and participate in off-site meetings and activities.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment including personal computers with associated software.
This is a seasonal, temporary position.
