Job Description

Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to provide instructional and classroom support for the Susan B English elementary classroom.


Position Overview

This is a support position within Susan B English School and requires meeting all requirements of school volunteers/staff.  The ideal candidate will have prior experience working with specific education programs to provide consistent and effective support to students and teachers. Prior experience managing or assisting in a classroom setting that includes multiple grade levels is essential. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during student assessments. Familiarity with both STAR and MAP testing. This position is a temporary position providing aide during the school year, while children are present. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Participates in active supervision strategies of positioning oneself to observe all children; watching, counting, and listening at all times, and using one’s knowledge of each child’s development and abilities to anticipate their actions and gets involved to give appropriate redirection when necessary.

  • Ability to provide children with experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as a sense of self and a feeling of belonging.

  • Reliability with respect to time and days to work, as well as flexibility with work tasks.

  • Monitor and assist in positive strategies to prevent aggressive behavior and to deescalate volatile situations.

  • Provides support to Teachers to ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

  • Maintains classroom in accordance with applicable guidance for health and safety.

  • May be required to supervise some activities that include hiking, outdoor walks, or time at a playground.

  • Ability to interpret test score values, willing to follow instructions, and understand how to put materials together for students to support lesion delivery.

  • Abide by SVT Professional Conduct of Employees policy and maintain a level of confidentiality.

  • Demonstrate ability to operate computers and related software.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Other duties as assigned.


 

Required Qualifications

1. Requires fluency in both oral and written English.
2. Requires an appreciation and respect for other languages and cultures.
3. Requires ability to assist with lessons and instruct students under the direction of the teacher(s) and building administrator.
4. Requires thorough knowledge of all programs and policies relating to Susan B English School, its programs, and the ability to work closely with others to satisfy objectives.
5. Requires diligence in keeping an accurate daily log of student data and records.
6. Requires willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require, a strong sense of teamwork, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
7. Requires skill in working with students in pull-out, classroom, or distance education models. Requires the ability and willingness to incorporate appropriate technology to support students' progress. Ability to understand and utilize the tools used by students to participate in synchronous and asynchronous courses. Ability to access and navigate various hardware, software, programs, and apps with minimal training. Ability to troubleshoot fundamental problems.

8. High School Diploma or recognized equivalent



Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before parents, staff, and students.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to generalize information from one situation to another and to determine when additional guidance or support is needed.
Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to operate computers and related software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Work Environment

 

Seldovia Village Tribe is a drug-free, alcohol-free, and tobacco-free work environment.  An individual in this position may be exposed to communicable diseases or hazards common to a childcare setting.  Work environment may be noisy.  Some work outdoors where exposure to natural elements including but not limited to sunlight, rain, wind, and insects may take place.  


Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision
and fine motor skills to work on computers. The employee must regularly travel to village schools to serve students and participate in meetings or in-services. Reliable transportation is required.
