TITLE: Substitute Kitchen Assistant
REPORTS TO: Manager of Food Services or designee
POSITION SUMMARY
Assist the kitchen manager in the operation of the food service program. Substitutes are called to work
on “as needed basis.” No guarantee in the hours called to work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant
to be representative, not exhaustive. Some staff may not perform all the duties listed while in other
cases related duties may also be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable

● Set up serving line(s) in designated areas, work in the dish room, and perform daily clean-up
according to established procedure.
● Responsible for serving food meeting established serving schedule and portion specifications,
and record tray/product counts as required.
● Collect and record cash sales according to established procedures.
● Maintain the highest standards of safety and sanitation in all areas of the kitchen.
● Assist with food preparation according to a planned menu utilizing uniform recipes to achieve
the needed quantities and portion serving size as directed.
● Assist with inventory. Protect the district’s food and supplies against pilferage, loss, theft, and
abuse.
● Be available to help plan and/or assist with occasional special functions outside of the regular
work schedule.
● Work cooperatively with all levels of management and staff. Help ensure that finished product is
of best quality both in flavor and appearance before it is served.
● Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent (preferred); or vocational certification; or related work
experience in the field.

Language Skills. Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence

that conform to prescribed style and format using good spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills.
Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one or group situations.
Mathematical Skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in
standardized situations. Desired characteristics include: flexibility; confidentiality; ability to organize
ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals; enthusiasm; ability to express ideas clearly and
understand concepts being discussed; ability to learn new ideas and skills; ability and willingness to

CLEARANCES/CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
● Current fingerprints on file with OSPI with results satisfactory to the district.
● Pass post-offer employment physical.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE: Valid Washington State Driver’s License, Current Food Handlers
Permit, First Aid Card (preferred), and other specialized training as required.
CONTINUING EDUCATION/TRAINING: As required by the district and OSPI.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must

1. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop or bend; to use hands to finger, handle
or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is
occasionally required to taste, smell, sit or stand; kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally
required to climb and balance and work in confined spaces.
2. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift, and/or
move 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color
vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of
those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable

1. The employee may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather
conditions, is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and cold and risk of electrical shock. Appropriate
clothing necessary.
2. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; at times, however, while using
certain equipment, noise level may require hearing protection.
