Job Description

Position Overview

A Railroad Tamper Operator is responsible for operating specialized machinery designed to align, lift, and compact track ballast beneath railroad tracks. This role is critical to maintaining railway track geometry for safe and efficient train operation. The operator plays a key role in ensuring the structural integrity of rail lines according to industry safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate railway tamping machines to align track and maintain proper track geometry.
  • Inspect machinery prior to and after use to ensure safe operation and report defects or maintenance needs.
  • Perform track maintenance activities, including lifting or shifting rails and replacing ballast as required.
  • Coordinate with track maintenance crew members to accomplish daily work assignments.
  • Interpret work instructions, track plans, and safety requirements.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies while working on or near train tracks.
  • Complete operational logs, maintenance records, and reporting documentation as instructed.
  • Assist with other rail maintenance duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience operating railroad equipment or machinery in the rail industry.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Physical capability to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment and materials up to 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of machine controls.
  • Commitment to following safety protocols and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification or formal training as a Railroad Tamper Operator or track maintenance technician.
  • Hands-on experience with railroad maintenance-of-way equipment.
  • Familiarity with railroad industry regulations and guidelines (e.g., FRA standards).
  • CPR or First Aid certification.
