About the Department

The Office of the City Attorney is committed to providing excellent legal services, consistent with the highest professional and ethical standards, to the City with the goal of protecting and advancing its interests in serving the people of San José.

Position Duties

The Office of the City Attorney for the City of San José is seeking attorneys with a career objective to practice law in state and federal court as a trial attorney. 

The City’s litigation portfolio includes a broad range of substantive legal issues arising under both state and federal law. As a City litigation attorney, under supervision you will have primary responsibility for all aspects of assigned cases, including pleading, litigation strategy, client communication and coordination, discovery and document review, motion practice, settlement evaluation and negotiation, and trial. The City’s varied and novel legal issues require excellent research, analytical, and writing skills as well as the ability to vigorously defend complex matters.

Salary range (dependent on experience):

Deputy City Attorney: $121,795.18 - $204,832.94

Senior Deputy City Attorney: $155,442.04 - $274,602.64

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be an active member of the State Bar of California and have relevant civil litigation experience.

Education and Experience

Deputy City Attorney - Successful completion of a Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school and one
(1) year of experience as an attorney.

Senior Deputy City Attorney - Successful completion of a Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school and four (4) years of experience as an attorney.


Other Qualifications

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to work independently, as well as in a team setting, and handle multiple assignments in a fast paced environment. A background in municipal law is preferred.
