Job Description

The Goodwill Excel Center Adult High School is currently seeking an Staff Accountant for our Central Office - Goodwill Excel Center, located at 1015 Norwood Park Blvd. Austin, Tx 78753.

The Goodwill Excel Center is the first free, public charter high school in Texas that provides adults ages 18-50 the opportunity to earn their high school diploma, complete an in-demand professional certification, and begin postsecondary education. There are seven campuses within the charter district. Two campuses are in Austin: one at the Goodwill Community Center and one in South Austin in partnership with American YouthWorks. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant will be responsible for general ledger reconciliations, month end close, annual audit assistance and maintaining accounts by identifying, verifying, and recording transactions.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Accounting

  • Record daily bank activity.
  • Submit month-end journal entries.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintains inventory reports for Student Support Incentive Vouchers (SSIV).

 

Accounts Payable & Purchasing

  • Manage vendor setup and documentation. 
  • Reconciling benefit invoices.
  • Administer the Organization’s purchase card program.
  • Reconcile the monthly purchase card statements.

Annual Audit and Compliance

  • Assist with year-end close including booking accruals, reconciling statements and payments. 
  • Support the audit engagement. 
  • Maintain schedules for fixed assets & depreciation.

 

Grant Accounting and Reporting 

  • Review grant expenditures for appropriateness.
  • Submit monthly grant reports for drawdown.
  • Maintain grant spending plans.
  • Communicate with grant/project managers.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Report and communicate problems, issues, and areas of concern to Finance Compliance.
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with vendors. 
  • Attend regional training to keep up with public education accounting requirements and changes. 
  • Educate team members on accounting procedures and coding. 
  • Serve as needed as the accounting representative on special committees.
  • Assist with special accounting projects as needed. 
  • Establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • Two+ years accounting experience including accounts payable, month and year end closing. 
  • Proficiency MS Office skills in Excel.
  • Ethical behavior handling sensitive financial information.
  • Courteous, professional manner with strong customer service skills.
  • The foresight to request assistance when unable to complete tasks or meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented mindset and problem-solving attitude.
  • Strong knowledge of various operating systems and productivity tools. 
  • Strong complex problem-solving skills. 
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the mission.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Texas public education finance laws and requirements. 
  • Knowledge of federal and state fund requirements.
  • Experience with charter school financial reporting
  • Experience with Skyward Finance Database
  • Understanding of marginalization and how it impacts those Goodwill serves and employs.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and talk or hear. 
  • The ability to cope with and tolerate moderate levels of stress is also a necessity. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
