Summary:
Prepares operating rooms and establishes sterile fields for surgical procedures. Assists surgeons and surgical team by providing instruments, supplies, and equipment while maintaining strict sterile technique throughout procedures. Ensures operating room safety and efficiency through proper equipment handling, specimen management, and adherence to infection control protocols.

* Serves as a positive promoter of change and growth within the surgery center, while serving as a role model of professional behavior
* Utilizes knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
* Provides surgical scrub assistance, in either the primary or secondary role, during invasive procedures performed within the surgery center
* Occasionally provides surgical scrub assistance, in either the primary or secondary role, during invasive procedures in other areas of the facility (OB, ED, etc.)
* Performs other functions in the OR that require adherence to sterile technique
* Gathers and prepares supplies, instruments, and equipment for pending surgical procedures, based upon surgeon preference cards
* Updates surgeon preference cards following each procedure on an as needed basis
* Performs surgical hand scrub per AST/AORN/CDC guidelines
* Gowns and gloves self, surgeon, and assistants utilizing sterile technique
* Sets up sterile field with appropriate supplies, instruments, equipment, solutions, and medications as required for procedure utilizing sterile technique
* Labels all medications and solutions on and off sterile field utilizing standard practices
* Performs appropriate instrument and soft supply counts with the circulating RN prior to, during, and after every surgical procedure
* Prepares sterile drapes and assists surgeon with draping patient/sterile field
* Vigilantly observes surgeon and uses knowledge principles to anticipate what the surgeon will need next
* Passes instruments, supplies, equipment, solutions, medications, etc. to surgeon during procedure utilizing appropriate technique and without delay
* Maintains highest standards of sterile technique before and during procedure
* Observes for breaks in sterile technique and calls any issues to the attention of the surgeon and circulating RN and takes steps to rectify any breaks in sterile technique immediately
* Always utilizes universal precautions when handling contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies
* Prepares and applies sterile dressings per surgeon preference cards or direct order
* Assists with lateral transfer of patients to and from OR table/gurney utilizing proper body mechanics and appropriate assistive devices
* Cleans, disinfects, and prepares instruments and equipment for terminal sterilization
* Assists with maintaining supply par levels for all items
* Functions in SPD on an as needed basis to manually clean laparoscopic items after hours, utilize the drying cabinet for laparoscopic items in after hour situations, using the mechanical washer in cases of an emergency, and assisting with putting away and rotating sterile instruments based upon AAMI/AORN/AST/IAHCSMM guidelines / requirements
* Utilizes individual manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) documents and processes all instrumentation/equipment accordingly
* Operates various equipment for cleaning, sterilization and high-level disinfection of instrumentation/equipment daily, ensures proper diagnostic testing is completed prior to initiation of processing and completes and maintains documentation for these processes
* Subject to return to surgery on a “call back” basis for emergencies and be physically present in the CNDH Surgery Center prepared to perform duties within thirty (30) minutes of notification and within twenty (20) minutes of notification if on-call for OB
* Functions as a Surgical First Assistant (SFA), as qualified and as assigned, as outlined by the Association of Surgical Assistants (ASA) Must complete requirements according to SFA competencies
* Provides first class customer service to both internal and external customers and responds to inquiries, compliments, and/or complaints with professionalism, courtesy, and efficiency
