Salary: NC Principal Salary Scale - Level B2 


Reports to: Superintendent


FLSA Status: Exempt


Supervises: Certified and Classified John A. Holmes Staff


Work Week Schedule: Monday – Friday; nights and/or weekends as required


Work Hours: 40


Months per year: 12 





PURPOSE:


The High School Principal serves as the instructional leader and chief administrator of the school, responsible for establishing a culture of high expectations, continuous improvement, and shared accountability. The principal leads the implementation of a comprehensive School Improvement Plan grounded in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework to ensure academic success, positive behavior, and equitable outcomes for all students.


This position aligns with and is guided by the North Carolina Standards for School Executives, ensuring leadership practices that promote student achievement, professional growth, and operational effectiveness.


 


STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP



  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous monitoring of the School Improvement Plan aligned with district and state goals.

  • Use data to establish clear goals and measure progress toward improved student outcomes.

  • Implement and sustain the MTSS framework to support academic achievement, behavior, and social-emotional development.

  • Promote a shared vision of high expectations for all students and staff.


INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP



  • Observe, support, and evaluate instructional practices to ensure high-quality teaching and learning.

  • Facilitate use and development of  professional learning communities (PLCs) and targeted professional development aligned to student needs.

  • Ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

  • Use data to inform instructional decisions and interventions.


 


CULTURAL LEADERSHIP


 



  • Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and inclusive school environment that fosters respect and high expectations.

  • Implement a comprehensive student behavior system aligned with MTSS, including proactive support and interventions.

  • Monitor student attendance and lead efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism.

  • Build strong relationships with students, staff, and families to support a positive school culture.


 


HUMAN RESOURCE LEADERSHIP


 




    • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate certified and classified staff in accordance with state and local policies.

    • Foster a collaborative work environment focused on professional growth, accountability, and retention.

    • Ensure staff assignments align with student needs and school improvement priorities.



 



  • Address personnel matters with professionalism, consistency, and adherence to policy and law.


 


 


MANAGERIAL LEADERSHIP



  • Develop and manage the school budget to support instructional priorities, MTSS implementation, and extracurricular programs.

  • Ensure efficient operation of school facilities, safety procedures, and compliance with policies and regulations.

  • Oversee student services, scheduling, and operational systems to maximize instructional time.

  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with all reporting requirements.


EXTERNAL DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP


 



  • Build and sustain partnerships with families, community organizations, and business leaders.

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding school performance, expectations, and initiatives.

  • Promote meaningful family and community engagement in school programs and decision-making.


 


MICRO POLITICAL LEADERSHIP


 



  • Advocate for students, staff, and school needs within the district and broader community.

  • Navigate complex situations with professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment.

  • Ensure decisions are student-centered and aligned with district priorities and policies.





EXTRACURRICULAR & COCURRICULAR LEADERSHIP




  • Provide oversight and support for all extracurricular programs, including athletics, fine arts, and student organizations.



  • Ensure programs align with district expectations and promote student engagement, leadership, and well-being.

  • Supervise athletic directors, coaches, and arts program leaders to maintain high standards of performance, safety, and sportsmanship.

  • Promote equitable access to extracurricular opportunities for all students.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



  • Valid North Carolina Principal License

  • 3 to 5 years administrative experience

  • Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership and school improvement.

  • Knowledge of MTSS, data analysis, and effective intervention strategies.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Computer and social media skills


 


WORKING CONDITIONS


Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work. 


Indoors and Outdoors: The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Outdoor conditions are based on classroom projects and extra-curricular events.
