Overview
Yale Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Communication Internship
The communication intern will work directly with the Communications Specialist (Staff Writer/Reporter) and the FAS communications team on internal and external communication initiatives.
Projects may include:
- Researching, writing, and editing department, program, and faculty profiles;
- Interviewing and surveying faculty members and students;
- Writing short- and long-form news stories according to in-house style guidelines;
- Draft content for FAS social media channels;
- Assisting with outreach to department and program chairs, staff, and faculty in order to gather news, stories, and updates;
- Updating news and content on the FAS website;
- Creating presentations, web images, posters, handouts, and other visual and print materials using PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop, or other programs;
- Helping develop new formats and templates for FAS news content;
- Completing research for FAS Dean’s Office staff.
Required Skills and Abilities
This internship is suitable for students with strong writing ability who are interested in developing skill and experience writing in a professional context; students who are interested in journalism and storytelling; students with graphic design or visual arts experience; and students who are interested in interviewing researchers and learning more about academia and higher education.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Develops marketing campaigns for exhibitions, events, and programs, working closely with the communications director to establish priorities and plans to most effectively grow the library’s audiences on campus, in the New Haven community, and beyond.2. Creates digital video, photographic, and text content for the web and social media, including the Beinecke website and its Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube channels.
3. Writes new content and edits existing content for the library’s website and serves as point person from the library in content migration to the new website to be launched in 2019.
4. Leads tours and programs with New Haven school and community groups and assists in development and promotion of temporary exhibits of collections materials.
5. Works with communications colleagues in other Yale units.
6. Monitors trending news topics relevant to the library and develops content for digital and social media.
7. Researches best practices in communications by peer institutions and develops action plans for enhancement of library communications programs.
8. Supervises student interns.
