General Purpose of the Position:
The primary duties of the Assistant Press Operators position shall be to assist Pressmen on the operation of rotogravure presses, work in the ink room and warehouse (ink warehouse and off-site) duties, cylinder mounting, and wash house duties under the general direction of the shift supervisor. Assist Slitter operators as directed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow proper OSHA standards and is trained in lock out/tag out, confined spaces, hazard communications, hazardous waste, and fire training. Follows all plant safety rules; understands and follows ISO procedures and GMP personnel practices and guidelines.
- Ensures that presses are properly supplied with roll stock and prepares rolls for splicing;
- Operates overhead cranes to mounts/unmounts rolls of the raw and printed material on unwind and rewind stations and WIP racks from the rotogravure presses.
- Take raw material samples to QA for quality checks.
- Assist press personnel with web breaks, checking viscosity and set up auto viscosity on presses.
- Mount cylinders in carts and ensure correct cylinders and inks are staged by job. Set up ink pumps, hoses, and sumps for job changeover.
- Works with the press crews and other assistants in all phases of job changeovers.
- Mount and scope cylinder conditions and record data as required.
- Operate parts washers and solvent recovery systems; load and unload parts washers with carts and parts
- Match ink color to standard for press runs and mix ink for job requirements. Stage inks, varnishes, coatings, and solvents for press jobs.
- Inventory inks, varnishes, coatings and solvents. Maintain toners and stage impression sleeves as needed.
- Load/unload raw materials and cylinders; organize and inventory supplies at off-site warehouse if required.
- Prepare LIP starch mixture for press operations
- Set up and stage material for packaging of bobbins on pallets.
- Push/pull printed press rolls or rolls from the slitter.
- Maintains appropriate paperwork or records.
- All other tasks or duties as assigned.
Requirements
Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow work instructions.
- Visual, especially color acuity for detecting flawed/substandard printing is vital to this position.
- Requires mechanical ability.
- Attention to details and ability to work under the pressure of deadlines.
- Effective oral communication skills needed to work with others.
- Reading and writing comprehension as well as basic mathematics.
- Skill in lifting heavy packages and objects and operating forklift or other materials handling equipment in tight congested areas.
Computer Equipment and Software Requirements:
Basic computer skills to operate a computer to obtain customer job specifications/ISO procedures for processing and converting of material labels.
Physical Effort:
Work requires exerting up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 75 lbs. of force occasionally to move/lift objects vertically and/or horizontally. Work requires employees to stand/walk occasionally with frequent reaching, stooping, bending, with occasionally crouching, kneeling, and twisting to move product or parts to and from machines.
Working Environment:
Work is performed primarily in manufacturing, warehouse, labs, or rotogravure press production areas including permanent enclosures. In accordance with our safety program, all employees receive information training on required PPE equipment, chemicals, and equipment used within the press enclosures and the plant. Manufacturing atmosphere may contain fumes, odors, dust, etc. Noise levels fluctuate according to proximity of operating equipment.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two years of demonstrated work experience preferred.
