Job Title:               Special Education Bus Aide Paraprofessional


Department:          Mountain Vista K-8 School


Reports To:           Special Education Director or Principal


 


 


SUMMARY: Similar to a paraprofessional or teacher’s assistant who assists in maintaining a safe educational environment, the Special Education Bus Aide assists in maintaining a safe school bus environment. Their duties may include directing students on and off a school bus, supervising conduct while a bus is in motion and students are loading/unloading, operating wheelchair lifts and assisting with other special needs, and evacuating riders in case of an emergency. A Special Education Bus Aide may also be tasked additional duties, such as escorting younger or special needs students to and from the school bus as well as assisting with securing a harness, keeping a student alert, monitoring for allergies or seizures, reporting unsafe behaviors and implementation of a behavior or safety plan.


 


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


 



  1. Report to campus each day, on time.

  2. Assist with the supervision of children as directed.

  3. Assist in maintaining a safe school bus environment.

  4. Supervising student conduct on the school bus.

  5. Operate wheelchair lifts as needed.

  6. Evacuate school bus passengers in the event of an emergency.

  7. Maintain confidentiality of information about students.

  8. Provide a positive role model for children.

  9. Notify supervisor before a planned absence.

  10. Demonstrate satisfactory work habits and attitudes.

  11. Follow rules, policies and procedures as adopted by the Governing Board.

  12. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Special Education Director or Principal.


 


QUALIFICATIONS:         


     1. High School Diploma or GED, at minimum. 



  1. Ability to communicate and work well with students, staff, parents and the public

  2. Dependable

  3. Ability to work under pressure

  4. Highly Qualified, determined by Para Educator PRAXIS Exam, or associates degree, or 24 credit hours of accredited college coursework

  5. CPR/First Aid certified


 


SCOPE AND SALARY:  194 day position as an at-will hourly employee based on the Classified Staff Hiring Schedule, with holidays and benefits according to district policy.


                                                                                             


EVALUATION:  To be conducted by the Special Education Director or Principal.
