JOB SUMMARY
Performs a variety of routine tasks, primarily including accurately sorting and shelving library materials in order to maintain the order and appearance of the library; performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Department or Branch Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Accurately and efficiently sorts and shelves books and other library materials alpha/numerically;
• Performs shelf reading and reorganizes shelves for correct location of materials and attractive appearance of shelves;
• Replaces library periodicals in the proper location;
• Replaces reference materials used at the desk;
• Ensures library orderliness; puts away materials left on tables; keeps rooms neat and tidy;
• Assists other library staff when needed;
• Refers patron questions to permanent library staff;
• May be required to work in multiple locations and on any of the 7 days of the workweek (Sunday – Saturday);
• May empty book drops during regular library hours.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The employee is expected to perform or possess the following:
1. Ability to gain working knowledge of Peoria Public Library’s policies and procedures;
2. Ability to act as a representative of Peoria Public Library to the public;
3. Ability to understand the organization of the library collection;
4. Ability to learn library systems quickly and thoroughly;
5. Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere;
6. Ability to keep all relevant parties informed of all major issues and to recommend changes as appropriate;
7. Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse individuals (customers and staff) in order to accomplish library and department goals and objectives;
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; and
9. Ability to operate relevant computer systems and office machines.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. Must be a high school or college student - 16 years or older.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work requires light physical effort in the handling of moderately light materials in non-strenuous work positions up to 40 pounds. May require standing for long periods of time and frequent stooping and bending.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, libraries, classrooms or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire and building safety regulations.
