Job Summary 

The Electrical Engineer II will manage the design and development of embedded systems. This role will work closely with research, development and manufacturing teams to design circuits, layout PCBs, write basic firmware drivers, and support hardware bring-up and testing. The position provides hands-on exposure to embedded systems, microcontrollers, communication protocols, and integrated product development.

 

This position will report to the Director, Computer and Electrical Engineering. The role is full time, exempt and located at our Oakland, CA Facility.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Design analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
  • Perform basic circuit simulation and analysis using tools such as LTSpice or PSpice.
  • Create and maintain schematics, BOM and PCB layouts using Altium Designer.
  • Lead hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and validation testing of prototype boards.
  • Support development of embedded firmware using C/C++ for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Integrate and test communication interfaces including I²C, UART, SPI, USB.
  • Assist in integrating Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or other wireless modules.
  • Work with common transducers and electromechanical components, including: Audio components (microphones and speakers) visual displays (LCD, OLED, TFT), motors and motor drivers, common sensors and other peripherals.
  • Use Python or other tools for testing automation and enhancing development tools.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop requirements, prototypes, and solutions for test fixtures, manufacturing equipment and commercial products.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to ensure optimal system integration, packaging, and thermal performance.
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical documentation, and subsystem architecture decisions.
  • Participate in developing Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, and other documents required under medical device manufacturing guidelines. 
  • Work with quality and manufacturing engineers to develop component specific testing and inspection protocols.
  • Provide guidance to junior engineers.


Minimum Qualifications 

Education, Experience and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 3 – 6 years of experience in electronic hardware design and development.
  • Strong knowledge of analog and digital circuit design.
  • Strong working skills with Altium Designer.
  • Rich experience with microcontrollers and embedded systems.
  • Expert programming experience in C/C++ and Python.
  • Strong knowledge of communication protocols.
  • Experience using lab equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Strong skill in debugging circuits and software.
