Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Support

General Purpose
Performs complex professional and administrative work supporting the planning, coordination, and implementation of the school division’s student conduct and support programs. This role advances positive student behavior, ensures equitable discipline practices, and supports safe, inclusive school environments. Work is performed under general supervision, with oversight of the Director of Student Services personnel.
Essential Job Functions
Assist in the development and implementation of student conduct policies, procedures, and support programs.
Support schools in adopting proactive and restorative approaches to student discipline, including behavioral interventions and de-escalation strategies.
Collaborate with school administrators to ensure consistent and equitable application of the Code of Student Conduct.
Support the Director of Student Services in coordinating division-wide initiatives related to:
Student behavior
Attendance
School climate
Guide administrators on:
Disciplinary actions
Due process
Student rights
Assist in reviewing, investigating, and resolving discipline appeals, complaints, and grievances.
Coordinate and support alternative education programs and interventions for students with behavioral needs.
Analyze discipline, attendance, and climate data to:
Identify trends
Inform decision-making
Develop targeted interventions
Assist in ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Collaborate with cross-functional departments (e.g., Special Education, Student Services, Academic Support) to support diverse student needs.
Support crisis response and behavioral threat assessment processes, as needed.
Design and deliver professional learning for administrators and staff on:
Student conduct
De-escalation strategies
Restorative discipline practices
Assist in monitoring departmental programs and supporting budget oversight.
Serve as a liaison between schools, families, and community agencies to promote student success and well-being.
Oversee and coordinate home-based instruction related to disciplinary actions.
Facilitate the division’s after-hours incident reporting line to ensure timely, confidential communication with key stakeholders.
Serve as the lead Student Services representative for Comprehensive School Improvement Plans (CSIPs) in schools requiring intensive support.
Attend School Board meetings and disciplinary hearings, as required.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Educational Administration, School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field
Minimum of five years of successful experience in public education, preferably in:
School administration
Student services
Discipline-related leadership roles
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills
Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate licensure and endorsements as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of student behavior management, restorative practices, and discipline frameworks
Understanding of public school systems and applicable laws and regulations
Strong conflict resolution, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including facilitating difficult conversations
Ability to analyze data and translate findings into actionable plans
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with administrators, staff, students, families, and community partners
Commitment to equitable practices and inclusive school environments
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This position operates primarily in an indoor environment with moderate noise and temperature levels and may require travel to school sites. Work is primarily sedentary, requiring occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force. Duties involve repetitive motion, hand and finger use, and extended periods of sitting and computer use. Effective verbal communication, hearing, and visual acuity are required.
