Job Description

About the Department

This is a seasonal part-time position which performs daily, hands-on duties and responsibilities associated with the Wasilla Museum and Visitor Center.  Position works under the general supervision of the Museum Curator and Museum Aide through the Museum Curator. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

The work is performed in a combination of indoor and outdoor settings. Day-to-day activity level can be considered moderate with most of the shift standing. Regular interaction with the public occurs. Noise levels can be low to moderate depending on the customer flow


Position Duties

  • Assist in orienting visitors to the museum and the Mat-Su Valley.
  • Collect monies for admission tickets and merchandise using Point of Sale System
  • Perform general receptionist duties to include email and phone calls.
  • Provide daily accounting reports of visitors and sales.
  • Assist with creating and executing guided tours, specifically school and civic group tours.
  • Assist Museum Aide and Museum Curator with museum store.
  • Reorder and restock visitor brochures and other information.
  • Update and maintain Museum Visitor information.
  • Assist with creating flyers, brochures and other museum documents as assigned.
  • Perform light custodial duties in the museum and town site with knowledge of proper care for artifacts and historic preservation.
  • Assist with data input in the Past Perfect artifact database and labeling artifacts as needed.
  • Assist with research, production, installation and deinstallation of exhibits as needed.
  • Work with museum volunteers.
  • Assist with museum special events, planning, preparing, and executing.
  • Open and close museum as needed.
  • Drive to various locations to hang event flyers. 
  • Perform cleaning and disinfecting of bathrooms, front desk, museum shop and other public areas in the museum daily with proper training.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively and express ideas clearly and concisely both in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to work with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of the local area and Alaska.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment to include but not limited to computers, printers, cash register, credit card machine, fax and copy machines.

Other Qualifications

  • High school graduate, GED or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
