Job Description

About the Department

**This position is not eligible for tele-work**

The Transit Communications and Customer Service Specialist performs skilled work supporting the development and execution of visual communications and marketing materials for Blacksburg Transit. Assists in the design and production of graphic and multimedia content to support campaigns, customer communications, and outreach initiatives. Provides creative support across digital and print platforms and assists with customer engagement efforts. Work is performed under the supervision of the CCS Manager. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Position Duties

  • Assists in the design and production of graphic and visual content for social media, print materials, website updates, and digital communications
  • Develops content to include basic photography, video, multimedia, etc., for use in both external and internal communications
  • Applies established brand standards to ensure consistency across all materials, both internal and external
  • Supports the execution of marketing campaigns/initiatives by preparing creative assets and formatted content
  • Assists with content scheduling and posting across social media and digital platforms
  • Assists with website updates, including formatting and content uploads
  • Assists in developing presentations, flyers, and outreach materials
  • Provides support for community outreach events, including preparation of materials and displays
  • Assists with the collection and collation of public input received
  • Supports internal communications through formatting and design of materials
  • Assists with monitoring social media channels, identifying customer questions or concerns, and assisting with responses as needed
  • Provides timely, accurate, and courteous responses to customer inquiries as directed, ensuring alignment with established messaging and service information
  • Escalates complex or sensitive customer concerns to the CCS Coordinator or CCS Manager, as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of graphic design principles and visual communication
  • Experience with design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar)
  • Ability to follow established brand guidelines and communication skills
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content formatting, with the ability to operate desktop publishing and other related software
  • General knowledge of marketing and communications, with the ability to learn and understand the internal organization and operation of the department.
  • Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive financial and administrative reports
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly, professionally, and concisely both orally and in writing, with attention to detail and a customer-focused approach
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with a strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, community agencies, businesses, media, vendors, and the general public

 Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree with coursework in marketing, communications, graphic design, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One (1) year of experience in graphic design, marketing, communications, or related field preferred

 Special Requirements

  • Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and repetitive motions, and occasionally requires standing, walking, and lifting
