Job Description:

The Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture seeks a dynamic Director to contribute to the teaching, research, and service missions of the school, the interdisciplinary setting of the College of Art & Design, and the collaborative opportunities offered by Louisiana State University (LSU). The Director is the executive officer of the school and is responsible to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost through the Dean of the College of Art & Design. The Director is expected to provide innovative and visionary leadership, advance their research and scholarly interests, and exhibit dedication to advancement in all areas of the school.

Responsibilities

  • 30% -- Provides leadership for the educational programs, budgeting, and focus and assumes responsibility for the management of quality, effectiveness and progress of the School; formulates and executes School policies and executes University and College policies as they affect the School, with due regard for the prerogatives and responsibility of the faculty;

  • 25% -- Promotes excellence in teaching and scholarship; encourages and facilitates good teaching research, enforces standards, orients new faculty members, facilitates faculty growth and development, encourages preparation and submission of grant proposals; assigns specific duties to School faculty members and defines the faculty member's responsibilities to the University;

  • 10% -- Supervises faculty performance, protects faculty rights, defends academic freedom; recommends all appointments, promotions, dismissals, leaves, salaries, and salary adjustments, and all other personnel actions relating to the School academic and non-academic staff; calls and presides over meetings of the School faculty an implements faculty actions as appropriate; annually conducts a review of the service of each member of the School faculty evaluating teaching, research and other faculty service; coordinates the recruitment of new faculty members;

  • 10% -- Prepares schedules in a fair manner; maintains proper faculty/student ratios, offers courses in desirable sequence; recommends changes in courses and curricula in consultation with the faculty; evaluates academic programs, suggests and encourages appropriate faculty action; considers academic appeals by student; assumes primary responsibility for recruiting students;

  • 10% -- Serves as communications officer for all official business within the Dean of the College of Art & Design; encourages and facilitates communication, understanding, and collegiality; promotes the public image of the School and University; provides professional leadership, increases School visibility, encourages good public relations, explains and defends policies and procedures; acts as liaison to the Friends of the Hilltop Arboretum outdoor teaching lab and facilities;

  • 10% -- As Professor of Practice teaches either graduate or undergraduate courses as deemed suitable based on faculty's background and School program needs; participates on graduate committees and maintains membership in Graduate School Council; appoints committees with consultation with the faculty and delegates responsibility; participates on College and School committees, as assigned; participates in research or scholarly work; performs service to the University and community.

  • 5% -- Prepares and executes the School budget including budget requests and requisitions, maintains budget records, improves cost effectiveness, allocates supplies and travel funds; has general charge of all University property charged to the School; supervises use of supplies and equipment, protects against loss and unauthorized use, and is responsible for maintenance. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or a related field.

  • At least one professional degree in Landscape Architecture (undergraduate or graduate) or a related field and/or equivalent degree from outside North America.

  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills through experience or training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or licensure in Landscape Architecture or a related field.
