POSITION SUMMARY:
The Controller will serve as a key financial leader at Magellan Jets, responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. Reporting directly to the CFO, this is a highly hands-on role requiring direct ownership of day-to-day accounting activities.
This individual will operate in a lean environment and must be comfortable balancing both strategic oversight and tactical execution. The Controller will partner closely with the CFO and Senior Manager, FP&A to support financial planning and business decision-making, while ensuring the integrity and accuracy of all core accounting functions. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, a process-improvement mindset, and a willingness to roll up their sleeves to support the evolving needs of the business.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
As the Controller, you will be responsible for the following:
- Lead and actively participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including execution of key accounting tasks, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP
- Own the integrity of the general ledger ensuring the day-to-day execution of the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions are being completed by the Staff Accountant accurately.
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
- Oversee complex revenue recognition, including prepaid jet card programs and on-demand charter revenue
- Ensure accurate tracking and reconciliation of deferred revenue and client deposits
- Monitor cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to support operational and strategic needs
- Manage the external audit process, serving as the primary liaison to auditors and ensuring a timely and rigorous annual audit
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Oversee all tax filings and regulatory reporting in coordination with external advisors
- Partner with the CFO and Senior Manager, FP&A on financial strategy, forecasting, and board-level reporting (CFO retains ownership of budgeting and board reporting)
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Sales, and leadership to support business decisions and ensure accurate financial data flow
- Own and optimize ERP and financial systems (e.g., Salesforce and accounting platforms), including reporting, data integrity, and automation initiatives
- Identify and implement process improvements to streamline workflows, reduce manual effort, and increase efficiency
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for key accounting processes
COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge & Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA designation required
- 1-3 years in a Controller or similar role
- 6-10 years of progressive accounting experience
- Deep knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
- Experience in the aviation, transportation, logistics, or hospitality industry (preferred)
- Experience in a high-growth or private equity-backed environment (preferred)
- Familiarity with subscription-based or membership revenue models (preferred)
Skills:
- Strong proficiency with ERP and financial systems (e.g., Salesforce, NetSuite, QuickBooks, Sage) and advanced Excel
- Experience improving processes, implementing controls, and driving operational efficiency
- Ability to balance detailed execution with higher-level financial oversight
- Experience with system optimization, reporting automation, and data integrity initiatives
Abilities:
- Comfortable operating both strategically and tactically, with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and execution
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Clear and effective communicator across teams and leadership levels
- Able to translate financial data into actionable insights for cross-functional stakeholders
- Adaptable and proactive, with a willingness to take ownership in a lean, evolving environment
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Performance Management:
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports to ensure alignment on priorities, performance, and professional development.
- Lead formal performance review processes, including quarterly and annual evaluations.
- Establish clear, measurable goals and objectives aligned with departmental and organizational priorities.
- Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and constructive feedback to support individual growth and accountability.
- Address performance issues in a timely and professional manner, partnering with HR and senior leadership as appropriate
Team Leadership and Oversight:
- Lead and scale the accounting function, currently consisting of one Staff Accountant, with the opportunity to build and expand the team as the company grows
- Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching, and support while remaining actively involved in execution
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance team environment
Talent Development and Onboarding:
- Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of accounting team members, ensuring alignment with organizational needs and culture.
- Develop and execute structured onboarding and training plans to ensure new hires are effectively integrated and set up for success.
- Identify development opportunities and support ongoing training to enhance technical accounting knowledge and leadership capabilities within the team.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Location: Monday–Thursday onsite in Quincy, MA; remote on Fridays
- Conditions: General office environment with moderate noise levels. Occasional travel to aircraft or client locations may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Extended periods sitting at a desk or workstation.
- Occasional walking/ movement between work areas (e.g., meetings, restrooms, or kitchen).
- Repetitive Hand and Wrist Movements via frequent typing and use of a mouse.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a Full-Time Exempt position.
TRAVEL:
Limited, but may require occasional overnight travel for industry conferences, client meetings, or operational oversight at other locations.

This Controller position offers a competitive annual salary of $140,000–$160,000. Final compensation is determined by experience and location, and the role is eligible for Magellan Jets’ full benefits package.
