Job Description

Job Title:  Lifeguard (multiple positions)

Salary:  $15.00/hour

Reports to:  Pool Manager 

Hours:  8am- 3pm, As needed

Building:  Scranton High School/West Scranton Intermediate School

Job Category:  Lifeguard

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To ensure the safety of all visitors to the aquatic facility and maintain orderliness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area
  2. Monitoring designated areas to recognize signs of danger
  3. Responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with district policies, procedures; completes related reports as required
  4. Performs all lifeguard duties, including ability to lift people out of pool, perform CPR/first aid, scan pool to ensure safety of participants
  5. Explaining and enforcing rules, regulations, and policies to ensure the safety of patrons as requested by supervising teacher
  6. Warn swimmers regarding unsafe situations
  7. Participation of in-service training as required by the school and district 
  8. Asses situations swiftly and make judicious decisions regarding the safety of swimmers

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older
  2. Completion of American Red Cross lifeguard training
  3. First Aid and CPR/Pro certification
  4. Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written
  5. Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds
  6. Available to work different shifts
  7. Ability to maintain certification level physical and mental readiness

ADDITIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ATTITUDE:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively
  2. Ability to exercise sound judgment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Ability to reach above and below the waist
  2. Ability to use fingers to pick up, feel, and grasp objects
  3. Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard
  4. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility
  5. Ability to lift and carry supplies and paper weighing at least than 50 lbs
  6. Perform a Lifeguard Skills test during the interview process; includes endurance, a timed event, and demonstration of CPR and lifeguard rescue skills
  7. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
