New Jersey State Bar Foundation, Summer Legal Associate Internship - Summer 2026



(Newark Youth Engagement Center)



Duties and Responsibilities include:




  • Develop a public education project that will inform youth of their rights under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, New Jersey Family Leave Act and the Fair Chance in Housing Act.

  • Hold educational groups several times a week that may include mock trials, lectures or other interactive forums on legal matters of importance to young people ages 18-24 years old.

  • Create fun and engaging social activities that increase interest in the law and individual rights.

  • Review credit reports with program participants and lead credit repair work that needs to be completed.

  • Support the individual casework being conducted by the supervising Staff Attorney.

  • Work closely with supervising Staff Attorney up to and including court appearances.

  • Create a shared calendar that publishes all youth activities to promote rigorous youth engagement.

  • Document all contacts with youth consistently and accurately into ETO.

  • Attend all required staff meetings.

  • Answer all emails, phone calls and calendar invites in a timely fashion.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.



*must be able to work a minimum of 40 hours/week for 10 weeks


* This is a Paid Internship with weekly earning of up to $1,000 a week

Qualifications


The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:




  • Current law student, interested in career in public service

  • Experience working with at risk and vulnerable populations including young at risk adults, victims of crime and serious trauma

  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) preferred

  • Demonstrated commitment working with diverse populations of youth 18-24 and a knowledge of urban youth issues

  • Must have strong communication and organizational skills, and possess the ability to communicate effectively with staff members and youth

  • Punctual, extremely reliable, highly organized and detail-oriented

  • Ability to work in stressful situations

  • Demonstrated legal knowledge of matters of importance to youth at risk of and experiencing homelessness including: Candidates with commitment to serving diverse communities and populations in New Jersey upon completion of law school encouraged to apply

    • Discrimination in housing and employment

    • Credit report disputes

    • Civil rights

    • Safe law enforcement interactions

    • etc.


    • Applicants must be the below requirements:





      1. has completed at least one year of law school;

      2. is enrolled in law school and is currently working toward a J.D. degree; recent law school graduates are not eligible;

      3. intends to live or work in New Jersey after graduation; and will commit to working on a full-time basis during the summer, i.e., a minimum of 35 hours per week.
