An Alternative Learning Room/ InSchool Suspension (ISS) teacher oversees students removed from regular classrooms, ensuring they complete academic work in a structured environment. Key duties include monitoring behavior, assisting with schoolwork, maintaining attendance, enforcing school policies, and facilitating behavior reflection to minimize future disruptions.
Responsibilities
- Supervision: Maintain a quiet, disciplined, and productive atmosphere, monitoring students in the ISS room.
- Academic Support: Ensure students work on assignments from their teachers, providing assistance where possible and encouraging academic progress.
- Behavioral Management: Implement behavior plans, help students reflect on their actions, and mediate disputes, often mentoring students on better choices.
- Liaison Duties: Act as a liaison between teachers, administration, and students, collecting work, returning completed assignments, and updating staff on student progress.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate daily records of attendance, behavior, and academic work completed, often tracking this data for administrative review.
- Serve as an alternative space for students that are not able to access their education in the regular classroom setting
- Other duties as assigned by administration
Qualifications:
- Skills: Strong communication skills, classroom management skills, and patience.
- Attributes: Ability to be firm but fair, de-escalate conflicts, and maintain confidentiality.
- Preferred: Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques or crisis intervention training
- Restorative practice training a plus but not required
