Job Title: Mechanic (Garage)        


 


FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt                                       


Employment Status : Classified         


License Required :     Yes -  (CDL), State Inspection License


 


Reports to: Supervisor of Bus Garage Operations


 


Summary


Performs mechanical maintenance on school buses, school board vehicles, county vehicles and equipment.


 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.



  • Perform assigned duties in the diagnosis and repair of vehicular equipment.

  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks following manufacturers’ manuals on all vehicles and equipment.

  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.

  • Prepare a standard work order on all jobs performed listing time spent, parts used and other items as required.

  • Perform required inspections on all school vehicles as required. Perform any repairs as needed. Completely fill out all documentation and turn in to be filed away.

  • Provide for all vehicle inspections according to School Board policy and State law.

  • Make necessary repairs with appropriate reports written for each inspection completed.

  • Observe high standards of safety.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team and work collegially with others.

  • Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment.

  • Ability to accept and apply all training provided.

  • Ability to provide on-call coverage over school holidays and breaks.

  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.


 


Qualifications


Possess the qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with others. Hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License. Have a CDL endorsement with a minimum of Class B and P & S endorsements or acquire within one year of employment. Virginia State Inspection certification, or acquire within one year of employment. ASE certification preferred.  Must be able to operate all vehicle types used in the division.


 


Education and/or Experience


Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; Minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


 


Language Skills


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively.


  


Reasoning/Other Abilities


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions.  Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.


 


Physical Demands


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.  The employee is occasionally required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.


 


Work Environment


The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock, outside weather conditions and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
