Role Summary



The Purchasing Team Lead is responsible for leading the purchasing function at an operational level while delivering strategic sourcing and commercial value. The role combines hands-on senior buying responsibility with people leadership, ensuring supply continuity, cost control, and supplier performance in line with business objectives.





Key Accountabilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and guidance to the purchasing team
  • Plan and prioritise workload to meet operational, programme, and production requirements
  • Lead sourcing, supplier selection, and negotiations for high-value or high-risk categories
  • Develop and maintain long-term supplier agreements and pricing structures
  • Drive cost reduction, cost avoidance, and total cost of ownership improvement initiatives
  • Own strategic supplier relationships, including performance reviews and corrective actions
  • Manage supplier escalations, shortages, and recovery plans to protect supply continuity
  • Oversee purchase order accuracy, material availability, and delivery performance
  • Ensure compliance with procurement policies, contractual requirements, and audit standards
  • Contribute to supply chain risk identification and mitigation planning
  • Support continuous improvement of purchasing processes, systems, and data quality





Decision Making & Authority



Has authority to select suppliers, approve sourcing strategies, and lead commercial negotiations within delegated limits. Provides recommendations and escalates decisions relating to high-value contracts, supply risk, or strategic impact.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience



Essential: Proven experience in a senior purchasing or strategic buying role within a manufacturing or engineering environment. Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, or mentor purchasing professionals. Strong commercial and negotiation capability. Experience using ERP/MRP systems and advanced Excel for analysis and reporting.

Desirable: Category management experience, exposure to regulated or ISO-certified environments, and professional procurement qualification (e.g. CIPS).
