Job Description

Description

Monitors conditions on Lake Michigan and displays the appropriate colored flag at South Haven’s seven beaches. Assists in enforcing the provisions of the South Haven Code of Ordinances related to the beaches/parks.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors beaches, primarily focusing on weather conditions and identifying safety concerns.
  • Changes beach flags in response to changing weather conditions.
  • Educates visitors on beach safety and South Haven’s Codes of Ordinances.
  • Discourages any activities that create a disturbance to others or are inherently unsafe.
  • Serves as code enforcement officer and may issue tickets for code violations.
  • Completes daily log of weather conditions, wave height forecast, and beach forecast. Inspection log also include color of beach flags at each location, and conditions of buoys, life rings, throw bags, and ropes. Inspection logs may be updated as needed.
  • Notifies beach visitors of beach closures as needed. Notify South Haven Police Department (SHPD) in case of visitors in violation of beach closures.
  • Notifies SHPD and South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) in case of emergency situations. Emergency situations shall be handled by SHPD and SHAES; Seasonal Beach Patrol staff may assist on the beach as directed by SHPD and SHAES staff.
  • Assists in litter control within time constraints.
  • Notifies Beach Patrol & Facilities Superintendent or DPW staff of repairs or cleaning needed at the beaches.
  • Closes pier gates as instructed by supervisor, SHPD, SHAES, Harbormaster, or City Manager.
  • Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED required.

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Frequent public contact requiring courtesy and sound judgment. Ability to communicate well with a diverse group of visitors/citizens. De-escalation skills required.

 

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license and good driving record.
CPR certification preferred.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Must be able to operate a small all-terrain vehicle legally and safely. Uses radios for communication. Occasional operation of desktop computer, laptops, or mobile devices.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms to change the beach flags and to complete other tasks. The employee frequently is required to walk and stand in sand. Employee must be able to talk, hear, and see. Employee must be able to differentiate colors in order to place the display the proper flags. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50
pounds.
