Job Description
Pay Range:$25.00 - $25.47 The purpose is to develop the skills to facilitate the delivery of medical services by assisting healthcare providers with direct patient care (infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric) and the day-to-day operation of the SEARHC Medical Clinic. The Clinical Assistant Trainee will be moved to a Clinical Assistant I position upon successful completion of training program.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Receives hands-on training to perform the functions of a clinical assistant.

  • Assists with rooming of patients.

    • Prepares for patient visit by reviewing chart for needed forms, follow-up labs or procedures needed.

    • Obtains and records age-appropriate vital signs per department protocol, medical history updates and confirming medications, documenting information in patient chart.

  • Performs clinical duties to include:

    • Sets up equipment and supplies for routine exams and minor procedures.

    • Follows protocol for collecting, labeling, and transporting laboratory specimens.

    • Assists patients with ambulation or transfer; performs minor, non-invasive treatments, e.g., simple dressing changes, use of an automated external defibrillator.

    • Performs basic health coaching and patient education as directed by the provider and according to evidence-based guidelines using patient education materials.  

  • Prepares and maintains lab and exam rooms.

    • Sanitizes exam rooms between patients.

    • Ensures exam room supplies are organized, stocked, and not outdated.

    • Maintains lab equipment and organizes lab supplies.

    • Assesses inventory, re-orders, and stocks medical supplies.

    • Disposes of solid/liquid waste and infectious materials according to infection control standards.

  • Conducts daily/weekly/monthly QA checks on equipment and crash cart.

    • Documents refrigerator temperatures according to regulations.

    • Keeps sterilization logs.

    • Demonstrates correct utilization of computer-based health information system and electronic health record systems. Notify provider of any repairs/safety concerns that need attention.

    • Maintains a safe and clean environment.

  • Completes all weekly requirements of Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program (CCMA). Remains in good standing with CCMA program.

  • Performs duties as assigned in a responsible, respectful, and caring manner to promote effective staff relationships.

Additional Details:

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required

  • High school diploma or GED - required

  • Must enroll in the next available Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program through the AK Primary Care Association

  • Basic Life Support

  • Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years

Knowledge of

  • Clinic procedures for receiving and following through on a patient visit and any related clinic treatments, procedures.

  • Medical terminology and the ability to readily learn and use various computer programs preferred

Skills in

  • Communication and use of customer service skills

  • Computer application skills sufficient to utilize medical database in a competent manner

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; strong organization skills

Ability to

  • Communicate and interact with all members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Recognize and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Safety and Risk Management Responsibilities

  • Employees are responsible for complying with safe work rules; reporting all accidents and injuries immediately; cooperating in all accident and injury investigations; reporting defective equipment and unsafe conditions.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.

  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • The employee may frequently lift and/or push/pull up to 25 lbs.

  • The employee may be expected to lift patients as required.

Work Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • The setting for this role will include office and healthcare settings.  Exposure to controlled temperature environments, both hot and cold, is to be expected.

  • All procedures or other job-related tasks may involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spill or splashes of blood or body fluids.
